For the return pipe, Im running a vertical distance of 10' and a horizontal distance of 20' or so.
The effluent from the UV (at my sump) is 2" and the bulkhead size for the display is 1". Will i see significant head pressure loss if i use the pipe reducer at the UV, before the 20' horizontal run? This will save me a lot of money.
You're better off in many respects with no valve at all.....you should only need that if you get too large a pump, which is also good to avoid.
That said, you want to run the
largest plumbing you can to minimize friction losses.
- Assuming your height and totol-length assessments are accurate.
- Assuming five 90º elbows until you specify the range of fittings that will be used.
- Assuming this is for your 150 gallon tank I saw in another thread.
- Also assuming you have normal flow requirements: feeding a skimmer and media reactor(s) in the sump
- You need about 300 GPH (2x) to 600 GPH (4x) of actual flow to do that. (Not the rated flow on the pump or drain.)
- Since the Aqua UV uses 2" throughout (correct?), hopefully is contributed minimally to friction loss.
You can see from the comparison numbers below that 1.5" plumbing will eliminate the majority of friction losses. 1" will add about another two feet of head pressure.
If any of my assumptions are inaccurate, these numbers are too – so post any necessary details/corrections!!
