Ok I have plans to move my sump down to our basement soon. Will be directly below where tanks are upstairs. I have a 4' 120 with dual overflows, and a 40b upstairs with 700 gph glass holes box. The drains on 120 are 1" and drain on 40 is 1.5"

I would like to use as few of pipes going down for a drain as possible. I also know pump flow will account for it. I'm currently using a Iwaki wmd-40rlt-115. Says has a head height of 21', I have it choked back to probably half way as full open is to much with only 5' of head.

Could I get by with a single 3" drain? Planning to have drain first into a 20 - 40 gal cheato tank, than into a 75-150 stock tank with live rock. May add frag tank later on.

Thanks in advance

Alex

I wouldn't think you needed anything larger than a 2", being as the pump is only good for 822gph at full speed at 0 head.
