Bashsea Skimmers

I don't know much about their products. I just emailed bashsea about their smart series sumps. As far as skimmers. I have a lifereef skimmer and will be getting a second skimmer tomorrow. The second one will be a redsea skimmer. But I also love how they look and perform. Plus they don't have a big breaking period like most do. My lifereef skimmer started to skimme withing within hours of installing it.

I have the 6-24 skimmer for my 150 gallon tank. Its the smallest of the bunch and in my opinion, still large. I got this skimmer for one reason - I wanted to run external. I've only had the skimmer for a couple months, so take this review for what it is.

Pros -
Not dependent on water level.
As long as you meet the minimum flow rating, you can run nearly any pump you want.
Cleaning is easy so far.
Looks industrial, if you're into that kinda thing.
Easy to dial in.
Looks and feels high quality.

Cons-
Takes up a lot of space considering this skimmer is only rated for 100 or so gallons. Compare this to a Octo skimmer for the same tank size rating and you'll see what I mean.
Expensive when compared to others.

In the end, I think the skimmers are underrated. I am able to overfeed my tank and this thing just pulls everything out and keeps my nitrates under 5. Besides filter socks, this is my only filtration with 15 fish.

I got the 6-30 in January, replacing a similar sized Lifereef. I run it 24 by 7 with two attachments 1) a media reactor converted to a dry CO2 scrubber and 2) a waste collector. It is plug in and forget for 30 to 60 days this way. Love it.

mine is silent. I have it running on a Vectra L2 as part of a closed loop in my sump, providing flow to two Bashsea media reactors and a fuge. So no pump sound at all, and the skimmer is generally silent otherwise.

Would it be possible to post Photo of setup, Did U use a Bashsea sump, what model and model of Bashsea skimmer, Thanks so much!

I had an 8-24 in a SS-48 sump. The skimmer worked great but took up over half of the sump. I only removed it to make more room in my sump since I don’t have room to run externally. Overall you should be happy just make sure you get a pump that is rated for the flow of the skimmer.

Thank u Kindly. I am looking at Bashsea 6-24 skimmer run w sicce 7. The sump will be bashsea 36 x14 wide or 18 wide. Will have to put both NEXT to tank as stand is configured not for sumps unfortunately. Do u Believe skimmer is worth the cost as I have a good ASM skimmer I could use for a FO tank 125 gallons plus sump. Thanks again>

I want to get the smaller one for my new setup just don’t see very many reviews or anything on them

I have a 6-30, I like that it is external, but it’s big and noisy. Running a sicce 7 and I would like to try dc to lower noise, but it’s in the fish room so it’s not all that bad

Why did u replace lifereef I heard they are great skimmers? Reason? Also considering one

I think the skimmer is worth the money. It pulls a lot of gunk out of the water. I ran mine with a eco tech pump and it was virtually silent. If you do go with it I would also purchase the skimmate locker from Bashsea.

Bashsea is top of the the line. Skimmer is amazing. Not as easy to clean as LR but with waste container it is a 60 day affair. I now have 3 200+ gallon tanks all with 100% Bashsea sumps and components. 1 skimmer, 6 media reactors, 4 bio reactors. Sumps are all SS-60s.

Pictures of my three Bashsea sumps and components, and then details of that on my Reef, with SS-60, Skimmer, waste collector, media reactor as CO2 scrubber, and 2 media reactors. I use one chamber as a fuge, and then have 2nd fuge external to the sump. Running Kessils on those fuges. Everything operating off Vectra L2 closed loop in sump. Chiller and UV are on the two returns. Geo Reef Calc Rx. All of this replaced Lifereef sump, skimmer, fuge, and Calc Rx. I will say Jeff's Calc Rx and Skimmer are excellent.

One big difference between LR and Bashsea is filter socks. Bashsea has it standard, Jeff does not like them at all, although he will build a custom sump that has them. I helped design one recently. I have new preference for filter socks, as there is lots of choice. Can do the standard mesh ones that Bashsea ships with their sumps, or go with 100 or 200 micron standard BRS felt socks, or do the plastic cannisters from Icecap and others where you can put filter media (in bags) or filter floss, or whatever. I think this adds lots of optionality.

We put a 6/24 on my wife's seahorse tank as they r so messy. The tank is 55 gal. Corner tank w a bashsea 24 gal sump. The 6/24 I thought would fit into sump but didn't. Actually no big deal as the skimmer is beautiful y built and looks awesome next to sump outside so another viewing aspect of her system is the entire system. As far as performance goes it's a Beast n we would love to have more, I have a 150 reef octopus that runs great but took much longer to set up n break in and still doesn't keep up to hers although is very nice n works great needs daily emptying the bashsea only needs monthly cleaning or empting as it is draining into a 5 gal water jug n it only fills that jug up to 1/8 of the jug n keeps the tank n sump perfect. It has been running for about a year now n im not touching it for another while as it doesnt need anything but cup cleaning 1 x per month and we clean its pump about 1 x per year as it goes. Good luck n happy reefing
