This is my basic sump design. I didn't show it in the picture, but would probably use bio bricks on the floor of refugium and chemical filtration in the return section. Also not sure if I want to go filter sock or filter foam. may need another baffle for skimmer, or could put it in the sock chamber on a riser What are your thoughts?

Here is a pic of mine which is similar to your design.

Can you put it after the fuge?

Possibly, I feel like I'm sort of limited on space if I want the heater to sit horizontally (which seems like the best idea), as the heater chamber needs to be like 12" + of the 20" tank (if I use my preferred heater, fluval M series). plus need another 4 inches for the sock chamber. . . . and I still don't even know what skimmer I want haha

This seems like a good, and affordable, option:

Check out the IM Helio heater. They are very compact and come with a controller.
