There isn’t a whole lot of info on here about these guys, so I wanted to provide another update. The basket star has grown and moves around quite a bit in the tank. Instead of surging the glass or hiding in the substrate, it travels on the gorgonions or, occasionally, soft corals.

It’s eating mysis in this video. Baby brine shrimp and oyster feast also seem well-received.

How long have you had him and how old is your tank? They don’t have the best track record in captivity.

I know they have a poor track record and I’m not recommending them. I’ve had mine for 7 months. It’s eating, growing, and very active in my seahorse/nps tank that’s about a year old.

I added quite a bit of Tampa Bay live rock initially and I believe the biodiversity has been helpful.

I’m just now seeing this and don’t know if I’ve replied. I’ve had him almost a year (September 2024 will be a year) and my tank was probably less than six months old when I got him. I’m convinced that accidentally putting him in my nps tank was what kept him alive. He lives on a gorgonian, but originally tried to live on a branching montipora before moving tanks. I continue to post because mine appears to be doing well. More than doubled in size and exhibiting feeding behaviors which are very interesting to observe. Not saying I recommend getting one, but based on my limited experience and what I’ve been able to find in the literature, they seem to have a symbiotic relationship with gorgonions.

They do have a symbiotic relationship with gorgonians (likely commensalism). If I remember correctly, some species feed off matter secreted by the gorgonians in addition to using them for camoflage.
