We had a power outage last night. It lasted from around 8:30PM to somewhere between 4-5AM. It brings me to my next question:

Battery back ups: What do you use? Let's see them.

I had an ecotech battery backup for my MP40 on my old setup. I just ordered a generator in preparation for my new system. I figured a bigger battery backup system will cost as much as a generator.

I'm using the APC Pro 1300. I haven't fully tested how long it will run, but I am only using the backup side to power my heater and return pump. Heater is in my sump so I want constant flow through the tank to keep the temp where it needs to be. I never say never, but in the 3 years I have lived in my neighborhood we've only lost power 3 times and it was all less than 10 minutes. The battery backup will run much longer than 10 minutes running just the pump and heater. I really should test how long just to know!

I would look into a generator before buying a battery backup. The battery backups won't power much and probably won't last too long. A generator would be more versatile, you could run your refrigerator, lights and other things. I lost power from the same storm from 9pm-2am. Waited an hour and fired up the generator. Ran the tank, lights in the house, cable and tv.
