To anyone who uses them, education please.

I see for aquarium use most are geared to backing up “power heads”, not return pumps? I see only few options specific for aquariums as opposed to computer battery back ups.

Questions:

1) Will a battery back up be able to back up a return pump?

2) A battery back up meant for computer, with multiple outlets, can you back up most or all your equipment?

3) Is there any reduction in power output, flow, or functionality when plugged into a battery back up (but not using)?

1. A battery back up will run a return pump, but the time it last is shorten due to the demand of a return pump.

2. A battery back up for a computer will work, but at a great loss. BRS did as study on this.

3. It depends on the battery back ups and the pumps they control. If the name brand is the same, lets say Ecotech, then it will automatically reduce pumps speed to 20 percent to save energy. I believe Gyre pumps will do the same with the Ice Cap battery back up.

Thank you. I had just watched that video which started my mind wondering. I didn’t like the automatic reduction in flow and power, and I don’t mind the short time a cpu back has. I was wanted a return pump to function normally if plugged into a back up (maybe a few other pieces of equipment). For me, I’d hope to only have a power outage for a few hours not days. If power out for days, I think I’d have bigger issues to worry about. Appreciate the response

I have Ecotech pumps with a Ecotech battery back up on them. I would like to add another battery back up for my return pump, but I really don't have long term power outages where I live, thankfully.

Now watch me regret saying that.

Keep in mind my pumps are all old (gen 1 Hydor koralias and maxijet 900 and 1200)…. they will not work with computer battery backups. have a Bilkin 375 and an APC xs1000. soon as power goes out and they kick into action all I get is impeller rattles on all of them. when I questioned Hydor long ago it was something to do with the sine wave the battery backups made.... this could be resolved by now, idk.

I just use an auto on battery powered bait bucket air bubbler just in case and replace the batteries every 6 months. gives me enough time to get home and fire up the inverter/generator and keep things alive. one I have is 2 d-cell's and runs over 72hrs.

search "Penn Plax Silent Air B11 Battery Operated Aquarium Air Pump For Power Outage Automatic Turn On" on amazon for item i use.
