So,

I have a 120G coming and I bought this:
CyberPower - 1500VA Battery Back-Up System - Black

I looked up threads on here and I cant find what MUST be running during a power outage. If my power went out for a long time on my house my furnace would not run and that would be bad for everything but let's say for a few hours.

I have DC pumps and heaters. Do I run a heater in the sump and the return pump to keep circulation? Or do I need a DC power head also running? I would think a heater and return pump will be the best bet.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

I am considering a back up bat. how long will this keep the system running? thx

If you know your house is going to get cold with a power outage then definitely run a heater. I would say a powerhead in the display tank with a heater would be your best bet but if you're probably not going to be at home when the power goes out then I would set something up in your sump area to run a return pump and heater in there that would turn on during an outage with your battery backup.

I really don't know. Its the more powerful unit. It will tell me once I have things running until then I just want to know what to run!

Thanks

Ok, I think the return pump with the heater in there will run the system fine until power is brought back.

Ok, so if I have my power heads and return pump and heater I think the battery backup will only run for 7hrs..

If I do just run the return pump and heater is the return pump good enough for creating oxygen in the tank?

Also the ones they sell for my return pump is only made for the pump.. why is no one concerned about the heater? Is it not a big deal or something?

How about this idea. Smaller heater (50w, whatever you think based on tank size vs battery size) that is dedicated to the back up system. Set at a lower temperature (73, 75, etc). It might not even be able to maintain temperature long term, but could at least slow the rate of temperature decline.

This is how I designed mine, but it hasn't really been put to the test yet. The idea is that my house is cold, and most power outages are less than 12 hrs. I am thinking this heating strategy is a compromise between conserving battery power and keeping the tank above a minimum critical temperature until power is restored.

I like it.. I just figured out that the $160 computer battery back up will run 300w for 21min... kinda silly .

I’m going to return it and get one for my pump only. The heater is the killer on these batteries. I guess the only thing is a generator but I live in a condo. Some one could easily take it Nd it would be loud as hell lol

Yup. My setup was nearly $800 to achieve my 12hr target with the return pump and the above heater plan

Man... that’s just to much $ ha.... should I just get a battery operated pump to bubble the water then? They sell a Jabo for $100 that will run my power head for about 12hrs. But if that’s it I can just get a battery bubbler . What’s the best option?
