I found my nephews action figure that’s battery powered in my sump. When I pulled it out this morning, I noticed that there some battery residue on his toy. He said he didn’t throw it in the water but it was sitting on the flat surface of my sump. So it must’ve fallen in with all the vibrations going on. I don’t know how long it’s been sitting in the water.

The fish are doing fine. I fed them to make sure they’d eat. If it helps I run carbon.

should I add a new bag of carbon and do a water change?

I hope no one has experienced this situation but if you had, please chime in.

any advice is welcomed

I doubt that battery has enough in it to have a significant effect on pH. The real concern is heavy metals, but that's not something you can easily test in a timely manner. Do a big water change, run some carbon, and keep an eye on parameters.

pH is 8.2

normal for my water

Nothing to worry about.

As long as the battery was newish, and not deteriorated and leaking from the case, then you don't have anything to worry about.

I wouldn't even bother doing a water change personally.

I just installed the battery yesterday morning.

gonna do a water change just to put me as ease. But I’ll be monitoring them with eagle eyes

Had this been a lithium battery, it may have turned out a bit more exciting, but with a NIMH, you have little to worry about.

No huge concern as battery is sealed for most part
Add chemipure elite which will remove any toxins and contains high grade carbon

Nothing to worry about. I bet the battery is probably just fine too.

I've run a lot of electronics, including NIMH batteries under water, nothing to worry about.

crazy thing was that the toy was still working lol

right, which is more proof that nothing leaked from the battery into your tank....

modern nimh cells are sealed pretty good. We used them for years in the RC toy hobby, and still do to some extent, before moving to newer lipo/lifo batteries. We routinely would run them submerged with no ill effects. Not just once, but over and over. Think RC trucks with nimh batteries, running submerged through water, over and over. We would waterproof some of the electronics with epoxy or CE glue, but the nimh batteries were never a concern. They were fine operating in water.

Thanks! I feel a bit better
