Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting. I have a 20-gallon water box cube reef tank. Last night I woke up to a what I thought was a burning smell. I went down and checked on the tank and the smell was coming from the tank. From what I could tell it seemed as if it was coming from the return which is where I have my heater. I have a cobalt aquatics Neo Therm 75W heater. I have attached picture of the heater so you can take a look. I notice a film on the top layer of water, and it looked like when gasoline spills into the ocean. The heater was still holding temp so I'm not certain that its the heater. The smell is definitely in the water. Since I've done a water 50% water change. Should I do more? Mind you it's only 20 gallons. My apologies if I posted this in the wrong thread, like I said I'm new to this and I appreciate any advice.

Tank has been up and running for about a year and half. The tank contains 8-12 coral frags, 1 clown, cleaner shrimp and a brittle star fish.

Hi there
Terrible feeling to wake up to a burning smell, huh? The cobalt heaters have a reputation of breaking. Is all your livestock acting normal?

As far as the pollutants in the tank, you can run activated carbon and/or poly filter for a while to clean up the water.
Edit: more water changes won’t hurt either

It was pretty bad. They look like they’re ok. Lights haven’t come on yet but we will see. Corals have yet to open because the lights aren’t on yet. I have some carbon I’ll throw in there to help get rid of it. Thanks for the reply.
