For the past few weeks I have been battling an algae outbreak in my tank which started as what I think was diatoms and now has progressed to red slime/cyano. I need to re-run the parameters as I've been out of town the past few days but when I checked them last weekend, everything was in check. Salinity was 1.026, Temp at 79, Ammonia/Trites at 0, and Trates at ~5. I suspect it has something to do with the lighting schedule (too long) but the corals all seem to very happy despite the algae growth. Thoughts/suggestions?

How old is the tank and what are you feeding.
I run a close to 14 hr light cycle and have been cyano free free for most of the year.
My skimmer slowed I pulled some chato from the fuge and fed like crazy and now I have some cyano.

How's your cleanup crew.

The tank is about 3 months old and we feed primarily LRS frozen food (nano and fish frenzy specifically). Occasionally we'll throw in some PE Mysis Pellets but nothing crazy and everything is eaten before it hits the sand bed. Now that I think about it, I think the algae started to manifest moreso when the chaeto was removed (over time it kept getting stuck in the mechanical filter between the skimmer/return chambers and I removed it). I have been meaning to put some more in for the past few weeks but haven't had time to run to our LFS to pick it up. Maybe that's experiment 1...

Coincidence maybe but....I've been feeding nothing but the LRS Reef Frenzy for the past 2yrs. Have been struggling with SB issues from the beginning. First I too thought it was Diatoms but over time has developed into a brown slimy stringy stuff. No matter what I've done I've been unable to rid my tank of this nuisance. Yes I'm still feeding RF.

Please try changing your food. My tank's dont like it. Never have.

The question I have though is that it's not even getting to the sand bed - be it the LRS or the occasional PE Pellets - the fish devour it, so what could it be doing? I guess there's a point to be made that they are eating and presumably pooping out whatever's left but still, is there something in LRS that would be contributing to it? o_O

I would say our eyes are not good enough to see what bacteria or an amphipod eats. and we dont generally notice dust settling in our house. Dissolved Organics. they still have weight and will settle.imo.

So many folks say more flow for cyano, but my observation is, my cyano seems greatest at the long end of the flow zone, especially if its a laminar flow, like my old jbj cube the outlets are at the back blowing forward, the front of the glass had highest flow, thats where the cyano was, where it blew all the dust and it piled up. My 55 right now is the same, a simple y in the middle and the cyano is on the left and right of the tank. Ive been working in the sump slowly for a couple weeks. ANd Momma got some new critters shes been feeding "healthy Portions" to. Its not on the rocks or in the middle or in the back.

depending on bacterial load in the tank, it could be vitamin c or aminos. I honestly dont know. I know a lot of folks use LRS with no issue.
One of my tanks CANNOT get two little fishies marine snow. Two caps over three days and it breaks out. My friend who suggested it just poures it right in the tank from the bottle.

fwiw Ive also had the cyano that clings to vertical surfaces like rock because it its leaching Po. I know it was leaching because I tested the rock(fresh saltwater test water insert rock overnight test water see po, po leaching) in that case flow does stop it from forming, but its still there.

thus my stance on sand. If its shallow Vacuum it. Or go DSB and let the bugs and worms eat it. In a newer tank there aren't enough bugs or worms or bacteria to keep sand clean. shallow or dsb. IMO IME

I went ahead and did a water change + vacuum and also scrubbed off any algae off the rocks with a toothbrush. I also added caluoera and will start turning some carbon tomorrow, we'll see what happens...

That looks great. It'll prob come and go. But it really does change as it matures.
Looks like the corraline is coming in

Thanks! I did start to see the diatom/brown film coming back on the glass today but it seems the cyano has stayed at bay at least in the past 24 hours. I got busy with a water change/cleanup on our 90G reef and didn't have a chance to add the carbon but will do that tomorrow hopefully to see if that helps.
