The question I have though is that it's not even getting to the sand bed - be it the LRS or the occasional PE Pellets - the fish devour it, so what could it be doing? I guess there's a point to be made that they are eating and presumably pooping out whatever's left but still, is there something in LRS that would be contributing to it?
I would say our eyes are not good enough to see what bacteria or an amphipod eats. and we dont generally notice dust settling in our house. Dissolved Organics. they still have weight and will settle.imo.
So many folks say more flow for cyano, but my observation is, my cyano seems greatest at the long end of the flow zone, especially if its a laminar flow, like my old jbj cube the outlets are at the back blowing forward, the front of the glass had highest flow, thats where the cyano was, where it blew all the dust and it piled up. My 55 right now is the same, a simple y in the middle and the cyano is on the left and right of the tank. Ive been working in the sump slowly for a couple weeks. ANd Momma got some new critters shes been feeding "healthy Portions" to. Its not on the rocks or in the middle or in the back.
depending on bacterial load in the tank, it could be vitamin c or aminos. I honestly dont know. I know a lot of folks use LRS with no issue.
One of my tanks CANNOT get two little fishies marine snow. Two caps over three days and it breaks out. My friend who suggested it just poures it right in the tank from the bottle.
fwiw Ive also had the cyano that clings to vertical surfaces like rock because it its leaching Po. I know it was leaching because I tested the rock(fresh saltwater test water insert rock overnight test water see po, po leaching) in that case flow does stop it from forming, but its still there.
thus my stance on sand. If its shallow Vacuum it. Or go DSB and let the bugs and worms eat it. In a newer tank there aren't enough bugs or worms or bacteria to keep sand clean. shallow or dsb. IMO IME
