I have a 20g Long BB with a considerable amount of corraline on the bottom (all over the place really). I’d like to add a sand substrate. Can I just add sand right over the existing corraline or should I remove it all first?

hi, you could scrape what you can off ,will help spread throughout tank,
or just cover ,will eventually break down into calcium

If I scrape it all off the sides (there’s quite a bit) should I try to clean up what I can (at least the big pieces) or just let it settle on the bottom?

Yes I would try to get the bigger pieces out, but again don't work too hard on it, it will breakdown naturally
