Hey guys - collected a bunch of dead coral.

Going to use it in my 125g tank which is a "dead reef". I have some SPS, lots of dead colonies, and now adding a bunch of these. Im stocking it with softies, and macro algaes.

What would people do as far as getting the corals ready to go in the tank?

A very mild bleach solution and then a prime/freshwater soak?

Thanks

You shouldn't have any issues. I used to do the same thing with a fish only tank that had coral skeletons. I rotated two sets, so one was able to sit out for a couple weeks before being used.

Should be fine. There's a lot of good stuff in the ocean to offset the 'bad' from the beach itself if you didn't soak them in anything before dropping them in. I actually collect macroalgaes from the Atlantic from the beach, toss them into a bucket, and dump them directly into my tank. There's so many goodies on it! Copepods, amphipods, worms, brittle stars, bugs, pipefish, gobies, you just can't go wrong! :)

50% hydrogen peroxide dip for 3 or 4 hrs. Better then bleach because u don't need to dry it out and it rinses pretty easy. Oh yeah and it kills everything!

Yea wish I was in that situation.

Im in dire need of some macros and Im actually having some shipped to me soon. There are no LFS's within 1.5 hours of where I live. Havent seen any macros available within 2.5 hour radius.

Tangs love the stuff - gotta have it. Plus I love the way it looks in tank.

Oh well - this stuff was dried out, I shipped it back from where I spent the winterim. So very doubtful much was left on it anyways.

I've always used bleach. After 24 hours, all the bleach has dissipitated into the atmosphere anyway. Just be sure to use unscented, so you can tell when its gone. I'd soak in bleach overnight, then I'd soak in fresh water with some Prime for a few days to be safe. As long as there is no bleach smell, you'll be fine.

Thats exactly what I did - its been soaking for near 24 hours. Going to take out a few pieces and sniff them tonight.

If we are good Ill be adding them to the tank.

No bleach odor at all - I rinsed them in FW several times before adding 100g worth of prime...so I think Im in the clear.
