What's up guys I'm ready to do the plumbing on my build...I'm going back and forth with Herbie or bean animal. Please show off your plumbing top and /or bottom of your tanks to help me decide? [emoji854]

I will take some pics of mine when I get home from work in a few hours.

There isn't a choice for me. If there is an option between the two the answer is a bean animal every time.

Herbie is a siphon with an emergency (usually with a trickle going down it).

Bean animal is a siphon, durso and emergency (completely dry emergency).

It is essentially an improved herbie with no downsides.

Mr Bean for me! ;)

Lol, quick question, do you put holes on top of both your siphons?

Lowest one no, its full syphon all the time. the 2nd that is higher does have an air hole and should only flow about 10% of its capacity. the air hole should be plumbed so that if water in overflow rises it gets covered and goes full syphon before water is ever high enough to get to the straight emergency stand pipe.

Actually I do have a hole in both the higher and lower drains.

The reason for the hole in the top of the full siphon drain is to help purge air when the return pump turns back on. Without it every now and then on start up a tiny bit of air can get caught in the siphon plumbing and eventually it will build up and the siphon will gurgle until it can flush it out. So a small hole will help get rid of that air. As the water level in the box will be high enough to fully cover the siphon and the hole in the top it wont matter.

The Reef Synergy ghost overflows come with a hole in both and I have seen a few who noticed the build up of air and later drilled a hole in the top of the full siphon to fix it.

Just one thing I would change is I wouldn't make the partial drain have a "durso" where there is a T and a 90 deg elbow. I would make it exactly the same as the full siphon with 2 90 deg elbows (with a hole on the top) just higher up. As like Drakonis mentioned if the water level raises it should cover the hole in the partial drain and turn that into a siphon but I didn't design mine that way (not intentionally) and stupidly glued it in when it doesn't need to be lol so I can't change it without a lot of effort.

Thanks guys, anyone else want to show their skills? I'm about to place a huge plumbing order and it looks like I'm going towards bean.[emoji3]

Just saw this thread, as I too am about to put together a bean animal... how did yours turn out?

Pretty good , silent, getting out of the hobby though unfortunately seeking entire build.
