It seems like it's been forever in the works, but I am about to plumb in my tank! I have it all set up for the bean animal overflow system, but wonder if the gate valve should be near the overflow box, or nearer to the sump, or does it even matter.

Any insight is appreciated.

Near the sump allows for the pipe to be full the whole way which keeps it quieter and prevents splashing inside of the piping around corners.

I have my valve nearer the overflow box ,, I did leave room above and below it so that if I ever had to cut it ,, I could add a fitting above it and below it ,, to be able to use the valve again , cost to much to have to throw away ,, I should have bought a screw in valve ,, I also added a inline PVC dis connect ,, just in case I ever have to take it apart for any reason ,, I won't have to remove one whole long pipe from the overflow box to the sump tank ,,

Functionally doesn’t matter. Definitely need it to be easy to access. Mine is down near my sump.

Sort of. The siphon starts easier and will run a little quieter and more consistent with the valve lower. But it works just fine with it higher. I've had tanks both ways.

agreed, but it will still flow the same amount of water. IMO ease of access should be the deciding factor as to where it should go.

If your drains are short it probably doesn't matter. If they are long the valve presents a restriction in the flow and it is harder to push air out below the valve completely. If you have a horizontal section it may trap an air bubble that shrinks and grows. This will make your flow fluctuate at times.
