What happens if you don't submerge the siphon line in the sump? I know it will be louder and cause splashing and salt spray... but will it effect the siphon??

I have a remote sump and I want it quite on the first floor, but, I don't care as much about the basement. My returns will be going into rollermats. If I submerge the lines in the rollermats, the water level will go up and down by about an inch - which might destabilize the siphon.

Plan ONE - open siphons into the rollermats. This would be easiest to plumb - and would leave room in my sump for an algae scrubber.

Plan two - water traps at the bottom to create a vapor lock. This is an alternative I dreamed up to submerging the lines - which might prevent air from getting in the bottom of the siphon lines - but I have no idea if this really helps anything.

Plan Three (least desirable) - make another water box and overflow - just for the sake of properly submerging the siphon lines. Here I can replicate the usual setup - but, now I have horizontal runs of pipes - not on siphon to put the water into the rollermats - and it is still going to splash and churn up bubbles - so I don't really know if I have accomplished anything. AND... now I don't have room for an algae scrubber.

Siphon will be fine with the bottom end open, just possibly noisy or messy like you said. Think about siphoning water or gas using a hose - works just fine with an open end.

That's kind of what I thought. I am over thinking it...
