Bean Animal return Sump pipe question.

My siphon only burped when it first stated up, after that it was rare. Having the outlets right below the surface (~1/2”) meant I didn’t need another way for the air to escape.

oh, and that’s on the drains, the return did is what connects to the pump. Just FYI.

Ok this is where I’m at. From right to left;
main return
Emergency return
Backup return
Water change return

When you say return, you mean the main drain correct? Return usually identifies the return pump line back to the tank.

The main drain line should terminate just below the water line to maintain maximum full siphon volume. It should also be unobstructed to eliminate possible clogging and failure.

Some of the sump manufacturers cut a slot in the sides of their pipes to let trapped air out instead of burping out the bottom. An air bubble caused pressure in the pipe and that isn’t good for a non pressure drain.
Oh, so they cut a slot in the part of the pipe that extends under water at the bottom?

I don’t see that as necessary. When the bean starts up it gurgles a little then is silent. I’ve been running a bean setup for about 10yrs and never had any issues with the burping. Prior to that I had over the back overflows..... talk about playing with fire!

your sump is beautiful FYI!

Thanks it has been a challenge for sure! That was my OLD DT, 20 years of abuse and it showed! Still has some life in her now.

Anyone assuming I was just trying to show off my sump, rest assured it was a legitimate question! I have never plumbed this type sump nor run any Bean variant.

If you want showing off here we go! And check out my build thread for the latest episodes of Pimp My Sump!

I was only messing around and toss in some envy because this sump is beautiful.

FWIW, the only time I had an issue with burping on my full siphon drain was when the main return chamber was sealed and wasn't allowing trapped air to escape building up pressure and causing constant and violent burping. I removed one of the thumb screws that held the gasketed lid down (drilled through all the way) and it went dead silent.

Thank you! I have been doing this reef thing for a long while and seen all the trends! I remember when everyone wanted a fish room, basement or even a closet to hide the ugly equipment. I’ve had all of the above and even outside equipment. Only thing outside with this new setup will be the mixing tanks and ATO. No more outside ugly sump this one is up from for all to see!
