Tank: 260 gallons.

Planning to get 3,000 gph through the overflow and I told them to make the drain sizes 2”

Now the aquarium people are saying that they only had gate valves that were 1.5”. They said I can use 2” ball valve, or I can look for 2” gate valves.

The aquarium manufacturer is saying that it will be impossible for me to finely tune with a ball valve and the system will get out of sync easily if pumps get clogged etc.

Opinions?

My opinion is BRS has 2 inch gate valves, 2 different brands.
I use one in my system.
I also have a 2 inch ball valve I got at Home Depot. I am also using it in my system. It is a lot more difficult to set exactly but can be done. It is on a drain between 2 sections of my sump so it isn't super critical either.

For controlling the drains from the display tank I use gate valves. I use ball valves for on/off so I can break unions if I need to.

I would go with a gate valve. I tweak mine regularly with a fraction of a turn. Good news, there are 2" pvc gate valves. Google it and look at images, or BRS. Bad news, you'll probably fall over when you see the price.

I had to brace myself because I need 2 gate valves.

I ordered from BRS. I’m telling myself “buy once; cry once”.

A gate valve is the way to go. I’d question why you’re shooting for 3k gph though going through your sump when your tank is only 260 gallons.

Good question. I want to really polish my tank up and have very efficient filter socks.

My old tank had too little flow through, so I went a little over 10x.

Now, I have a question, should I just use the 1.5 gate valves even though the plumbing is 2”? The holes for the bulkheads are 3” and the piping is 2”.

I actually need 2,600 gph. I don’t know why it’s 3,000.

I need advice.

Edit. Spoke to my tank manufacturer. We are going to use 1.5” gate valves.
