I am setting up a smaller 30x30 tank and would like to have the external overflow as small as possible from front to back.

To help make this happen I'd like to use 3/4" bulkheads for the bean with 1" down pipes.

Can anyone advise me not to? I ran the calc on his site and a 3/4 head shoul be able to handle 1000+ gph. based on that I would think I'd be safe?

I have always used the rule of thumb that the over flow pipes need to be double the size of the return lines. So if your wanting to use 3/4" return lines then i would use 1 1/2" over flows...

Definitely appreciate the input. I believe this applies more to durso's or any other non syphon system. It is my understanding that the bean can handle much more flow because it's a syphon. I am using an iwaki 40 with about 10 ft of head height so I am looking at abot 1000 gph. Maybe a little less.

I know I am really nitpicking about fractions of inches but it's just how the tank needs to be made:angel:

If I had to use 1" bulkheads it would not be the end of the world. My overflow would be closer to 4" rather than 3 1/2.

I have set up 2 40 breeders with bean and used 3/4" bulkheads. They are using quietone 3000 return pumps with 1" pvc to back of tank, sigle return in tank. I turned the returns down to about half as I think it is too much flow in tank and to much going throw sump. Head is 4'. If the plumbing box for the bean is external I used 2 90 degree elbows for syphon. T, 90, thread x slip, threaded cap, thread x john guest 1/4" for durso. Straight pipe for emergency. 3/4" pvc from bottom of bulkhead to sump. Gate valves are much easier to tune than ball valves, both work. I run 1" bean on my 125 with quietone 4000 with return y'ed full out and valve on syphon has to be half closed, 4' head.

Hi there,
Thanks for the input. So would say that you had room to spare if you ran your return fully open on the tank with the 3/4 bulkheads?

I would say ya, I didn'yt let it run very long before I closed the valve but didn't get any water in the emergency drian. The 40's have 20" wiers and running full out is fairly niosy, most is from the water pouring over the weir and from the durso back up kicking in. Not sure why you would want to run that much flow through the sump. If you really want to run that much water through the sump than I would say go to 1" to keep the durso back up from kicking in and keep it quiet.
