Hey all,

After a very long swapping my old tank out with a new one, I’m having issues with the overflow.

It’s a ghost style beananimal overflow. I can’t left the level in the overflow low enough to avoid water going into the open channel air hole.

1” drains.
Typical dual 90’s set up for the main and syphon line.
Syphon is higher than drain. Drillehole on top.
Varios 8 on 3rd setting and the main drain is probably half closed with a gate valve.
If I open the gate all the way, it dials in, but my sump fills way too high and water level in Display is too low.

Feel like I am missing something simple here, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Conor

In response to this, have you tried to bump up the speed of the pump to push more flow?

Yes, brings me right back to the current situation.
i am going raise the syphon height this morning and see if that does anything for me.

If getting proper operation of the siphon means the water level in the display is too low, that suggest to me that the internal skim box is also too low.

I was hoping to see pictures of how the pipes inside the overflow box are setup. ( but I see that might be impossible unless you went outside a took a picture through the window.)
Picture of how high the whole overflow box is, in relation to the tank.

That too. I ran into that problem with a eshopps L overflow box because the pattern hod you drill the holes too low.

Haha. That window is actually quite helpful. Sort of planned it that way.

I fixed it.
Raised the siphon in the overflow box. Had to raise the emergency too.
This effectively raised the water level in display and I was able to open the main drain valve some to balance it out.

Silence has been achieved.
Thank you for the tips and moral support,
C

Verify the thing about the level of the display been set by drain an not overflow height.

Level in te tank should be constant no matter if you run 10x or 3x overflow, or drain with 1 or 3 pipes.

That situation can cause real issue later if something happen with drains, and their capacity is reduced considerably.

The overflow and customtank came from Crystal Reef Aquatics so I certainly hope the overflow is at the right height.

i’m not sure how I would verify this.
But I think my issue was the syphon was set below the bulkhead entries to the overflow box which was causing issues.

It’s been running smoothly all day so I hope i have things worked out now. Did a few power outage tests before putting the plug back in the return check valve and all was smooth.

Still a little cloudy from the move, but pretty happy at this point:

So I see what you mean now.
The display water level is changing as I tune the drain. Well the top of the overflow weir box is only an inch below the top of the tank. I think the weirs themselves are cut too low.
Would that make sense?
It is running smoothly now, but I want it to be right.
I have to go to the manufacturer now and I want to be sure I have my ducks in a row. I’m not very happy...
I’ll get a pic shorty.

As long as the height of the emergency drain is lower than the top of the tank/overflow box you will be fine.
If you think the height of the inside overflow box is too low, ( causing low water level in the tank) then a simple diy fix is to get a piece of thin acrylic and glue it to the bottom part of the teeth on the overflow box.

As far as getting back to Crystal Reef Aquatics, I'm afraid we are all out of luck.
A few weeks ago ( last month) the owner notified the head tank builder ( Mike) that he was shutting the doors.
No explanation was given.
