First I want to start off saying I joined Reef2Reef as a way to improve my knowledge in fish tanks. I frequently visit another forum and now I'm looking to expand and maybe get some input from people outside of that network. Reef2Reef seems to have a ton of great people and I'm excited to settle in here.
I started out in the freshwater side of things and went from a 1gal tank to a 10 and then a 55 pretty quickly. When I started it was kind of an impulse and I really had no idea what I was doing. It wasn't until I lost the first 5 goldfish in 3 days that I figured there had to be something else to this hobby. From that point on it all grew and I did tons of research and had a fully planted tank for about a year. At that point I moved and tore down the tank putting my 2 half foot long goldfish into a private pond which they are still happily living in.
After moving my fiancé came accross a 112gal with stand which she bought for me under the condition I did saltwater. I started out not really understanding the initial start up costs and exactly how to set up everything but I made it work. Too keep this long story short here I am today.
My tank:
112gal 5ft long x 2ft deep x 18in wide
2x 120watt LED light fixtures.
DIY overflow
DIY sump simple 3 chamber design
DIY counter current protein skimmer
Jebao powerheads (that I hate)
115lbs of Rock.
1.5inch sand bed
Neptune Apex
Inhabitants:
1 yellow tang
2 Oscellaris clownfish - 1 black
1 Dispar Anthias
1 Royal Gramma
1 Firefish
1 Sleeper Gold Head Goby
3 Chromis
1 Mandarin
2 Mccosker Flasher Wrasse
1 Cleaner shrimp
2 Fighting Conch
Snails, hermits, pods
Maintenance:
I do 10-15% water changes every week. During this I scrub the rocks/powerheads and pumps if they need it and scrape the algae off the glass.
I currently feed 3 times a day and switch between pellets, frozen food and Nori.
My lighting schedule is for about 8 hours a day with actinics on each end for an hour.
I so far have had lots of luck running this tank without needing to medicate, or use any chemicals. I don't currently run any reactors or other media other then bio. Just recently I started dosing 2 part but I only have to once a week. My corals consist of mostly Zoas and I have a couple nice frags beginning to grow out. I recently started moving to some LPS and SPS corals which is why I am starting to monitor if I have to dose. I like to buy everything small so I can watch it all grow so my reef isn't grown out much but it's progressing nicely.
And finally a picture! (I hope. I'm still trying to figure this out)
