1) Make sure you have a hospital tank setup and ready to treat

2) expect some losses of fish

I had a very good experience with fishybusinessaquatics, they are very nice people, and they were helpful at the beginning, but I don’t recommend buying from them unless you are ready to treat for marine velvet on arrival. They have marine velvet in their system, and in my experience, they will say that the reason the fish got velvet was because of stress. To those of us lucky enough to not have seen velvet: velvet does not get stopped by having happy unstressed fish. It is a protist that grows in population exponentially and infects and reinfects your fish many times. Fish not being stressed won’t stop it in the least. And fish being stressed won’t make it show up in your tank out of nowhere, as it is not ordinarily in a healthy tank, and it does not exist in tanks with a prolonged lack of fish.

All in all fishybusinessaquatics has left me pretty disappointed. I left a review a couple weeks back or so that was pretty positive, but now I am left sad and furthermore disappointed.

For reference, here is the most recent email they sent me, after which they cut off communications. For further reference, I had been quarantining. Now the fish are in a hospital tank, and finally, my system did not have fish ever, and had not received livestock in over 6 months.

“Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that you have velvet in your system. We always recommend QT'ing new livestock for this very reason. It does not matter where the livestock comes from, it's critical to treat all new fish to a QT process. The stress of shipping and acclimation to a new environment can lower the fishes ability to fight off diseases. All fish are treated when they arrive at the facility and some fish are kept in systems with copper if they are more substitutable to disease or are actively being treated.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.”

Clearly, fishybusinessaquatics either does not understand what velvet is, or is playing ignorant. My recommendation: spend a little more to buy from a company that treats their fish or is upfront about their mistakes.

They told me I should have quarantined, but quarantine can’t even guarantee that fish will survive velvet. I just wonder why fishybusinessaquatics feels it’s okay to sell fish with velvet...

I stayed up all night and lost sleep for a good week and I already lost 3 fish, and I fear for my remaining 4.

We absolutely do NOT feel it is ok to sell fish with velvet and would never knowingly do so. Your report of velvet is the first we have received in months, which leads us to be somewhat skeptical that we have velvet in our systems, although we obviously can't rule out that fish come through the facilities carrying velvet. All fish go through medicated baths and fish that can be treated with copper, are treated with copper.

It is well-known on R2R that we use one of the largest and best wholesalers in the industry (one that is used by a number of fish stores, aquariums, commercial enterprises, and other major online retailers.) If we had a velvet problem, it would be far more pervasive than one client having deaths in their aquarium. We have notified the wholesaler that velvet has been reported and notified our picking/packing team to be extra careful when checking the fish before packing to look for any signs of velvet.

We do know what velvet is and yes, it can be present, but dormant until a fish is stressed/weakened. Here are a couple of articles that provide much more detail to support this:

We are sorry that your fish has velvet and that you have had losses, we never want animals to die! Yes, we do recommend that all fish be quarantined as do all other vendors. You chose not to purchase any warranties beyond the DOA guarantee. We offer a 7, 14, or 21-day warranty so you have the flexibility to only purchase what you want. We also offered you a 10% off coupon on a future purchase once you get your system in order.

Thank you!

This can literally be said about any fish retailer in the entire business. Any one of them. There is not a single fish retailer, with the exception of the business that @Humblefish is setting up, that will guarantee you get disease-free fish. You could have introduced velvet into your own system if you introduced literally any other marine organism (coral, invert or fish) to your tank within the 6 weeks before you purchased fish from Fishy Business.

If you want to keep disease out of your system, you have to quarantine everything, every time. There is no other way, aside from dumb luck, to keep a reef tank disease-free.
I did explicitly note, however, that I did not introduce anything to my system before or after my purchase within an amount of time below 6 weeks. In fact the last time I added to my tank was early this year, around february. I keep track of that.

Thanks as well. Perhaps I misunderstood the response I got, or perhaps it could have been worded better, but what I can most definitely note is that the blueface angel I received was faded in colors, and had it not been mid-change, I would have noticed that it was carrying velvet sooner, but because it also did not show classic symptoms of velvet, I identified it a little late.
Nonetheless, I was somewhat put off at the email as it made it seem differently than how it was.

For one, the email was not worded in a manner that made it appear as you say.

All in all, let’s say I bought the warrantee I needed (let’s put aside how I didn’t have the option to buy the warrantee for some reason), it would cost me approx $500 usd when I bought $300 dollars of fish. Let’s say I lost all my fish, and got $300 dollars back. I am still down $200 because I was sent sick fish.

And on the other side, if your dog died, would you be happy if offered to replace your dog? I bought those fish because I loved those fish, and I was devastated to lose them. The time I put in trying to save them alone cannot be replaced.

One of the most difficult things we have to deal with in this industry is animals dying, it straight up SUCKS! Having to look at people's videos of DOAs or warranty claims is awful. I wish I could say you get used to it, but you don't. All of us that work here are in the hobby too and love the animals. Any animal loss is one too many!

Please understand that as an online seller, things are pretty anonymous, we have no idea who you are, what your tank size is, what your experience level is, what your water parameters are, and what you may or may not already have in your tank (and when you added it.) Also, I want to reiterate that we have not had any reports of velvet from any other clients, which makes us a bit more skeptical when considering your claim.

Although you may not have seen the option to purchase a warranty, it was available at checkout:

As for a dog, you are not comparing apples to apples. 1) You can't buy warranties on dogs (just like most fish stores don't provide warranties on livestock), 2) You are typically provided vet records AND can take them to a vet for a full exam after you adopt/buy them, 3) You would never get a refund nor a replacement dog because the burden is on you if your animal dies once you take it away from a breeder or rescue. Also, if you were to return a dog to a breeder or rescue, you are not getting your money back either.

We are seriously sorry that you have lost fish. If you had purchased a warranty on any of the fish that you purchased from us and they had died within the warranty period, we would have covered you.

Update: I have come to the conclusion that this was not actually a case of velvet. The fish were evidently collected via cyanide fishing, I asked some vets and reefkeepers in the area and my angels all demonstrated signs of cyanide poisoning. The only thing necessary for further confirmation would be labratory tests. However hemorrhaging and random fish bruising, as well as spontaneous death are marked signs of cyanide poisoning, and the lack of sine pro quo symptoms of various infections points further to this situation.

How frustrating.

I would like to see your lab test on this. I think it’s pretty important since you started this thread convinced FBA sold you fish that had velvet and now you’re convinced it was cyanide poisoning? Did you lose any of your other fish? The fish you bought were they all from the same region? Did you lose all the fish?

It is understandable that you have some doubts here. In fact, I asked around here to arrive at the conclusion that it was likely velvet. In truth, I had not even considered cyanide poisoning way back. It never crossed my mind. It is when I lost another fish out of nowhere that I asked around, and was told that it actually seemed to by cyanide poisoning. It is with more deliberation that I came back here and shared this information.

The fish I have lost were all from Eastern Asia. I did not lose all of my fish, but I did lose all of my angels and a single sailfin tang (which I did not see sick, I arrived to find the other fish snacking on him, so I am not certain as to what happened with him, he was, however previously getting along well and had seemingly no health issues). What’s troubling is that just recently, I lost my last angel. I quarantined, I treated for internal parasites, bacterial infections, and with first cupramine THEN also chloroquine phosphate. And then suddenly one day the emperor angelfish rapidly deteriorated. No other symptoms of disease. Suddenly the gills turned crimson, and the area around there was also dark red, visible through the fish’s skin, exactly the symptoms I had with the flame angelfish and the blueface.

There were no symptoms besides gill issues that were in common with any of the listed or common diseases. As for ammonia? 0.00, and I even had them in a tank at a point in time where I keep sps. Fish do not just up and die when they were seemingly healthy moments prior.

I’m honestly just apalled at this. It’s entirely possible even FBA isn’t aware that these fish could have been collected this way.

Lab tests, on the other hand, are expensive and time consuming, and I do not know of a place that would give me the time of day for fish worth so (relatively) little.
