Hey guys and gals, so I know it's always fun to shop online and at our lfs to get new corals. However, don't forget to stick your neck out and meet local reefers! Most all of the corals I have came from local people within a few hours drive. Remember some of the perks!

1) locals often times get over whelmed with a certain type of coral and need to frag it or sell it just to make room.

2) people love to talk with people and show off their tanks and I personally love seeing other peoples systems.

3) minimizing wild caught livestock

4) you generally get healthy stuff that has already been living in a contained aquarium

5) pricing is usually way better and you often times can just trade stuff

6) sharing of knowledge and experience

7) it's just fun!!!!

Now don't get me wrong, online retailers have a certain niche in the industry for having the eye candy we all love so much, but odds are someone around you already has some of it. So my lesson of the day is to go out and socialize in real life!!! Make local friends!!! These forums are fantastic and supporting local businesses is awesome too, but to me there's no replacement for hanging out with a fellow reefer for a few hours to help each other out.

And just from my most recent experience. Found a guy locally when I was out and about today that had some montis that have over grown in his tank, and after some talking he sold me these pieces for 70 bucks. The red is about 8 inches in diameter and the green Monti is about 5 inches long. Not only did I get a good deal but i helped him out. I also made another friend today!!!

I try to buy almost everything (corals and fish) from locals. I’m lucky to live in a big city, so there’s a lot of us and some reefers have the good stuff.

With coral, you get better deals, get to talk shop, and don’t have to worry about shipping.

With fish, you get a limited selection, but know they’ve lived in someone else’s talk so they aren’t stressed from getting shipped across the world.
