I'm really tired of aptasia so I'm going to order some berghia nudibranches. The cheapest I've found is $150 for 20. I only need 3 so anyone else interested in a few of the remaining 17 for $7.50 a piece? That is less than half the price I've seen them anywhere else. I hope you guys' tanks are aptasia free but if not this is a good chance to get rid of them!

Do filefish get down to the foot so that the aptasia don't come back?

No. I hope Berghia does. A biological control, nudibranch or other organisms, does not completely eradicate a pest problem in my past experience. Nudibranch is pretty sensitive and tends to have a great affinity toward powerheads. I've tried lettuce nudis for bryopsis and velvet slugs for red planaria flatworms. As soon as the number of preys decreased and became difficult to find, they disappeared. Dolabella seahare on the other hand ate every bit of my golden dictyota without dying and dictyota did not come back after I removed the seahare. I hope Berghia will be like Dolabella.

I vaguely remember that gflat had some Berghia in the past. You might ask him about their effectiveness.

I read that it is the Berghia babies that really eradicate the aptasia. The initial nudibranches that you put in your tank eat at the aptasia and lay eggs. From what I read it isn't until the eggs hatch and the babies feed that they really wipe out all of the aptasia. That makes logical sense to me. I'll see what glat says. Thanks for the advice Tomoko.

Has anyone else tried Berghias to knock out aptasia?

Do you think the nudies would escape my wrasses?

I bought 20 for my biocube and still have more aptasia then nudis. Still waiting on day 46 but its been a month so far. Waste of $150 imo

From what I've read, it doesn't sound like filefish are reef safe so probably not a good idea for my tank. I threw two peppermint shrimp into the tank but I'm not holding out much hope for them getting rid of the aptasia. NoobtoSalt any chance your aptasia are starting to decline?

I've always used peppermint shrimp and they do a great job. About 8 months ago I got about 3 or 4 of those little guys and since then I have not seen a single aptasia in my tank. Before I got the shrimps I had quite a few aptasias too. It is cheap and works like a champ!

peppermints wont always go for the bigger ones. they like them small and squishy

I've heard that before too, but honestly mine peppermints did the job and did it well. I had a biiiig one that was stinging some of my zoas and the morning after i put the shrimps in the tank that aptasia was history. I would say i got lucky but another friend of mine who split the order with me had his aptasias gone also.
The only down side i had with the shrimps since i got them is that they go after the food when you are spot feeding your corals. I had to watch to make sure the corals were getting their food, but that's "doable".

Just thought i would give my two cents about this!

I put three peppermint shrimp in my 29 and they ate all aiptasia but one big one. The big one is getting bigger.

In my 180, I have a flame hawk. I don't know if he touches a really big shrimp, but I am told that hawkfish are shrimp eaters. The aiptasia there are big and my peppermint shrimp did not touch the big ones there, either.

Just noticed this. No unfortunately not. Very disappointed with the money lost on them

Are you still looking for the way to get rid of your aiptasia?

I am getting an Aiptaser (the electrical device to kill aiptasia and majano anemone) from someone in Memphis who makes them. H@rry demonstrated to me how well it worked. I am very impressed with it so I ordered one. The device is $35. If you or anyone else is interested, you can still piggy back on my order. Let me know if you want one.

Hi Tomoko,

I would like to get one of these Aiptaser too.
I am away from HSV until Wednesday. Can I still get one with your order?

Thanks,
BR

Yes. Aiptaser will be ready to ship in two weeks from now. I will contact you as soon as I get a notice from the designer/builder that he is ready to ship. I will let you know his paypal account information at that time.
