Hello all.

I am feeling like I want to add an UV Sterilizer to my 220DT. What would be some of your recommendations on cheap-er brands (like Jebao, Sun Sun, etc) or just an affordable UV? Maybe under/around $100?

Thanks!

For your size tank, I honestly do not think you'll find a UV for the price point you are looking for. Also, do some searching on the light you listed on your post, and look at what the majority of users experience has been with those lights (plastic deterioration, glass sleeve cracking). If you will be using the UV light for the long haul, save up and spend the money on a good quality UV. Jut my 2 cents

I agree with you. Most of my equipment is good stuff (like DOS, Trident, Apex, MP40's, Gyres, etc...) BUT, I am going to do a test run with UV, that's why I wanted to spend less, if I like, Id consider going to the bigger/better brands...

I don’t think you’re going to find anything safe or effective in the $100 range for your size tank. But you can look into units made for ponds. They are sized larger and cheaper. You can get an Evolution Aqua 55w unit for about $330.

As stated, you won’t find anything for your tank in that price range as a UV is one of those areas where you need to properly size it to get the benefit. I always recommend the emperor aquatics brand (pentair now). I just picked up a 50w for me 180g

How much was it?

I agree with everyone above. I have a 114w aquaUV. Emperor is also very good.

Check out aquaUV website and learn about flow rates and your goals. My goal was parasite control.

I think you'd be wasting $100 on a cheap unit. Start checking for used ones on CL etc. They do pop up often.

Check out these guys. Generally good quality without the crazy pricing …..

Not $100 though.

Thank you for the link!

What do you think about this one for my 220g?

Totally different topic.

But I was listening to the Reef News Network today (started from the begging) and they gave you a shout out!!! We are among a Celebrity up in here!!!

Aqua UV's are reasonably priced. Good quality. Going to be a little more than $100 dollars though.

That's funny - hopefully the 'nice' list not the 'naughty' one LOL.

Find a used one, I see used ones in my area that are main brand for a fraction of new. Perhaps because they are a bit more specialty item and not everyone chooses to run one so resale value seems to plummet.

I ordered a Jebao off amazon and returned it, it was very apparent how cheaply made it was, much cheaper feeling then the wavemakers of theirs (which I have a few off). I have seen some complaints about the black plastic leaching off and melting and so on. I got the feeling they were better/made for freshwater.

All but goodness my man... OK Back on topic.

I am not UV expert, so take this with a grain of salt. I am even taking it with a grain of salt myself.

I saw the Vecton light that was posted earlier, and it said it was a 25 watt UV rated for ponds up to 4800g. Now another brand 25 watt UV light is rated for 130g max. So I ask myself, who do I believe?

Pentair Aquatics
SMART UV 25 WATT
Specifications:

Max Aquarium Size: 130 Gallons

TMC Pond Advantage UV-25
Rated for ponds UP TO 4800 Gallons

Yeah very expensive :O

Depends on what your trying to do. Parasite control for your size tank, it's not going to be cheap, no where around $100. Water clarity can be done around $100.
