Best and Worst Reefing Investments

What has been your best and/or worst reefing investment, this can be a coral that you made a lot of money off of, or one that turned out to grow too slowly, or not be valuable.
This could also be equipment that crapped out or something that lasted a long time.

One of my worst was a blasto I paid $100 bucks for, its grown 2 heads in a year. Now they are everywhere.

Buying a piece of live rock with blue clove polyps and a gorrila crab. Next week I am taking down my tank to get him out

Going in on the buy to get the ******* colony was a good investment. My MRC skimmer was a good investement (built solid as a tank).The AquaMedic 3000 dosing pump was the biggest point of sale I have purchased, to date.

Best investment was getting into this hobby, it's so fun!
Worse..... Buying SPS which all bleached/died in my little 20L.

Best reefing investment - The time I have spent making friends in the hobby and going out of my way to visit in person, either in the local area or out of state.

The hobby is awesome, but made even better when I can enjoy it with other like minded people.

Worst: Getting a 40 dollar pink mushroom rock at my first LFS. Like 5 mushrooms.

Best: Upgrading to a sunpod 150w HQI from 72 watts of PCs.

I have to agree that the friends made are far better than any coral I have grown out.

Also, Sikryd, I have a really good reef buddy who just moved 'close' to your neck of the woods. I believe he is working near Dulles airport, but we used to 'Play Fish' all the time out here in Utah.

Worst investment hands down has to be putting time and energy into our local club, I was willing to give up my time and ran for president. Little did I know that my running against their 'king' would turn all of the 'old time members (half don't even have aquariums)' into bitter enemies.

Best: My Geo calcium reactor

Worst: Luckily not many in recent years, but many years ago... UV sterilizer, HOB trickle filter, various canister filters, and worst of all by far, a rio pump that wiped out my 125 reef about 12 years ago.

It may just be me, but since I look at reefing as a hobby, I don't see any parts of it as an investement

hooking a drain line to a waste container seams like aqua c and mrc are the only ones that make these.

worst: blue velvet damsel
half dead pagoda cup for 20 bucks that healed but has maybe doubled in growth in 2 years.
buying palys that are half-butt super glued when you put them in the tank they fly away never to be seen again.

Best: Vortech MP40w. I love the flow it puts in my tank almost as much as my corals do.

Worst: My octopus skimmer. I got one of the poorly designed TS150 models just prior to the release of the extreme line.

What is the best investment you have made on your tank. Maybe a controller, or ATO. Whatever makes it easier and some purchases that really made no sense.

Good: MSX300A - super quiet. T5's - no heat, coral color better than ever. Upgrading from a 90 to a 180.

Worst: A couple of fish that didnt do to well. Not upgrading to bigger than a 180.

Worst - Paid $140 for a bright pink/purple finger leather. Turned out that it was dyed, and lost its color over the next year reverting to a rather drab green/tan common finger leather. Still a nice piece, but not worth $140!

Best: Moorish Idol, Calcium Reactor, and upgrading from 110 gallons to 240 gallons!
