what is the best type of anemone to get and why? I have 2 clownfish and want to get them an anemone soon and not sure what is the best for them.

If it is your first, get a bubbletip or a condy. Bubbletips would be better imo..

I think the trouble is what best means. Most beautiful? Easiest to care for? Most likely to host the clowns? Smallest? Largest? Most affordable?

That being said. It sounds like you want the anemone for your clowns. The best for your clowns would be their natural host. Different clown species have different natural host anemones and clownfish are the most likely to host their natural host rather than a random anemone from another geographic area.

We would need to know what species of clownfish you have, but if you have a normal "Nemo" Clown then you have an Ocellaris clown. Magnificent anemones and carpet anemones are typically the best hosts but these both get very large and are more fragile.

What type of clowns? Ideally, an anemone that is a natural host species is best. Unfortunately, some of those can be more difficult to keep. I’d avoid a condy, they’re not a natural host for any clownfish.

I think i have the ocellarus clown. Here is pic. Do you think a BTA would work?

It’s not a natural host, but often the fish will take to it anyway. A magnifica would be the best choice, but is one of the most difficult anemones to keep. I’d give a bta a try if it’s your first anemone. Check local Facebook groups, bta’s split so much people are usually selling them for $50 or less.

Ok I think that is what I am going to do. I will try to find some with a cheap BTA. Do you know anyone that is selling one? Are you selling any?

A BTA is the most popular anemone and it is a great choice for a beginner. Just know that your clowns could wind up like the pair in my desk tank and completely ignore the two BTAs.
Ok. If they do ignore it it is still a awesome coral. And maybe down the road I will get a magnificent Nem!!!

Your best bet is to find a local Facebook group. I don’t have any to sell, but even if I did, do you really want to come to Wisconsin to get it? A local seller means no shipping which means a healthier anemone and a lower price. Shipping is usually at least $40.

Natural hosts for an oscellaris would be Mertensii, Magnifica and Gigantea. The last two are more or less expert level, Mertensiis are quite rare and grow huge (up to 4 feet in diameter).

They would also likely take to a Sebae or Malu, which aren’t too difficult if you can find a healthy one.

BTAs are also doable, but they will likely need encouragement to accept one.

What do you mean by encouragement? What do I do to get them to host it?

Back in the day, some 20 years ago, there used to be a saying: "Your first mistake in this hobby is getting an anemone."

I second (or third) that bubbletips are the way to go!
