Hi,
I need some expert advice. I have a mixed reef 105gal display tank with 20gal sump. In the center of the tank is a fairly large chunk of live rock with a meteor shower cyphastrea growing on it. It has taken over the rock and has killed a couple sps frags (1-2") and is now battling a monti colony (4-5" plating style). I estimate the volume of the rock at about 12-15% of the total live rock in the tank.
I want to grow sps in this area. So, I believe I need to eliminate the cyphastrea . And the only way I know to do this is to replace the rock.
I have some small sps colonies elsewhere in the tank so I need to be careful about water quality.
What is the best way to "replace" the rock?
Thanks!

Send it to me! But before that, order or get your hands on the rock you'll use to replace it and cycle it in a separate container. It'll be a longish process, depending upon your cycling style. When it's cycled, simply take out the old rock and put in the new fully cycled rock. Then bag that bad boy up and send it to me.

Or frag the crap out of it via a hammer and give it to people in your local club when the frags are healed. You could do that and keep the rock too if you wanted.

I have a few rocks that had some trash palys on it. Actually it was about 1/3 to 1/4 of my rock. I have had these trash palys for years and tired of every few month hitting them with Kalk paste to knock them back.

Last week I took all the rocks out in that section that had the palys on them , used a hammer/chisel and dremel tool with a diamond cut wheel to cut off the corals I wanted and then acid washed the rocks. I then let the rocks soak in fresh water for a day, scrubbed any remaining gunk off with a wire brush, soaked again and then finally put the rock back. The tank was a 180 that had been set up for a year. The rock came from previous tanks dating back at least 3 years . I haven't seen any cycle but I also have kicked up the amount my auto water change does and skimming wet to help. I'm prepared to do large water changes if needed.
