I have a tlf bio pellet reactor, using a mj1200. It's not very strong. What's a good pump that won't be too much bigger but is reliable. Like 400-500 gph range.

In this pic the bio pellets are as high as they get. A mild bubble movement.

an mj 1200 should be rocking those pellets...are you sure you dont have any clogs or buildup anywhere?

Maybe. I'll go over it again. Does taking it apart or stopping flow for maintenance effect pellet performance?

Just don't let the pellets sit in stagnant water for a long time.

I recently put an Eheim Compact 1000 (40-267 gph) on a bigger reactor (Avast MR5-18) and I have to throttle it back to prevent pellet pulverization. The MJ1200 has slightly more flow according to the specs, so I'd say double check the pump and plumbing...

I have the same problem, I run a mj1200 on my TLF reactor (the bigger one) and i don't get any tumbling in my reactor. I have around 800ml of pellets running right now. Hopefully someone will have a good pump suggestion!

That's weird. I cleaned the pump completely. It's still not rocking. It's just bubbling. Should I take the reactor apart and see if it's blocked? It really doesn't move the pellets much. Compared to some I've seen. If I take It apart, what do I do with the pellets? Set them in saltwater while I inspect it? There are a few pods in the bottom that I can see. I was even considering using a mag 7. But that's huge. Way bigger than anything I have seen used. Now having said all that, it moves no more now than it did the day it was set up.

Hi bige,

How old is your MJ1200? Is there any damage to the impeller or assembly? The MJ1200 isn't the strongest pump for bio pellets, but with the amount you have in the reactor, it should be giving you a decent tumble. We used a MJ1200 here with a similar set up here for a year with no problems. Also, are there any elbows, kinks, or anything in the tubing that may be restricting flow? You can use a larger pump such as a mag 3, but I really think you should be getting more flow that what is evident from the pictures.

It is an older mj 1200. I will switch it with a newer one and see how that works. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll report back after I put the new one on.

Ok so I put another mj1200 with result. Then used an oceanic biocube 29 pump and its even less. So I will take the reactor apart and check for obstructions.

a Sicce 2.0 would be a very good choice and would run you about $90

Well I cleaned the reactor all out. It wasn't dirty or clogged. I tried 2 different mj1200 and an oceanic pump. The last mj1200 I used gets the best result but I would not say it is "tumbling" the pellets. All pumps are at least 4 years old. So I will go buy a new pump. May try the sicce or mag 3. Not sure. I am going to review the instructions and make sure I didn't do something wrong.

That is actually a great mod. Thanks for the info.
I decided today that the algae in my dt had stopped receding so I added two more table spoons of biopellets and it is moving better. It's weird that more biopellets would move better but they are. I'm gonna let this go for a week and see what happens. If it stops moving I'm gonna mod the reactor.
But if your wondering how the biopellets are doing, all my coral have really gained a ton of color. And I have been feeding very heavy.

I like the Eheim variable flow compact series for this application. I'm using a Reef Octopus BM 110 in my system with a compact+ 2000, and think it's a great fit.

What is the recomended flow rate? My jar had no directions, currently running 250ml in TLF 150. I think Im running around 100 gph maxijet adj pump
