I think your best bet is to read up on it right here on R2R!

Many posts and experiences and questions can get answered quickly.

Go to the invert forum. There are several stickies you should read.

And I love my nems!

Fautin and Allen's book "Anemone fishes and their host sea anemone's" would be first suggestion, Joyce Wilkerson's book on clownfishes second.

Wow thanks for the quick responses!!

Will definitely check out some of those books

Those are beautiful!!!

I currently have a small BTA. My clowns don’t seem to pay much attention to it. They would rather host with my glass scrubber ;Shifty

Unfortunately there's nothing I can recommend that hasn't already been and then still, meh. Most of the reading I do on nems comes from scouring the internet for research papers...etc.

I should have given a better response here.

There are some basic things that you can learn in all of the books mentioned here so far. They are beyond meh, they're good books and gaining that basic understanding is a great start. Once you move to a point past that though and you realize it's impossible to find anything written since the advent of modern lighting that was put into book forum. Let alone more modern reef keeping practices...etc.

Hence, finding articles from research studies, or information from trustworthy sources on forums...etc really seems to be about the best way to go about learning about things these days.

@Amoo why don't you do a thread on this? Being serious here. My son is getting a Steve's upgrade and wants a nem for his clowns too.

aw man you edited it to be serious.....that would be quite an undertaking and something I'd have to think a lot about. Sadly it's not a good time for me right now in the middle of this kitchen reno.

I agree sites like this can be a great source, but it's mostly opinion based, and a lot of people try to help based on limited knowledge and experience, and it can be confusing sometimes deciding which opinion to take as sound advice.

The fauten and allen book has been my go to lately, as it's probably the most current and accurate source of info, but it's also a great guide as to which fish naturally accept host from which anemone's, and the needs of each anemone, as they are all quite different.
It's also very user friendly, and easy to find info needed, seek matches, regions they originate.

Most nem keepers on most sites are more experienced w/ BTA's, so a lot of advice seems based on their characteristics, and I see a lot of misinformation parroted based on them in regard to other anemone's.

I will say however, having spent many years in the nem forum primarily on that "other site", that if you are observant and pay attention to posts, people's experience, typical long term outcomes, sites like that and here can be a great source of info.

In my 33 years of keeping clowns and anemone's, it's really nice to have this tool, rather than years of just trial and error like we did when I first started
