Has anyone tried using plants??? Growing phyto or something?

Great question. I'm guessing you would need a lot of plants. Maybe two separate tanks with opposite light cycles also.

Many studies have been done on this plants do nothing so don’t even think about it you would need a literal rainforest in your house to even see if any change

Bump on an old thread.

Do we have any definitive opinions on the best media?

I'm new to this and am currently using the BRS in a double jumbo cannister. It lasted a while, but seems like it recently fell off, fast, with no color change whatsoever.

Curious if there is a higher quality media out there that also has an obvious color change so it can be swapped before it stops working?

IMO all the media is the same just some places are cheaper than others. The media from Ebay is the cheapest. Or wait till BRS has theres on sale.

Lasts a good while I recirculate mine with a valve that opens when ph is above 8.3 and my media lasts me over 40 days per canister and it’s the BRS Universal Scrubber

How do you do that with a valve. Interested to learn this.
I placed a T on my skimmers air intake line and I have it open to bring in room air when my ph reaches 8.3 so it doesn’t pull through the scrubber. Before placing the valve I was getting about 30 days recirculating and now I’m hitting over 40 days before having to change

What valve did you buy?

I used this one:
Operates the same way. Switches to ambient air the pH gets too high. Pretty neat gadget, easily controlled with the Apex.

Nice very similar. How long does your media last you?

I got about 6 weeks, but it's a double jumbo scrubber and we have 4 people in the office all day. We installed it on 3/31 and have been fine tuning/playing with it, and just had to replace the media a couple of a days ago. I think we might be able to get more out of this time.

Wow Thats pretty good

I use shopmedvet media on a recirculating skimmer. I get about 7-10 days out of it. I’m sure if I used a bigger canister I could extend this. You can’t go by change in color, as if I’m not mistaken, it will turn back white after a while.
