I need to plumb my new 40B. I have a large Eshopps overflow with the triple drain.

What would be the quietest setup and will all the parts be available from local big box stores (Lowes, Home Depot)?

Bean Animal will get most of the votes, if you have the three drain holes you might as well use them all;)

Definately the easiest and most reliable, but a herbie is pretty close to being as good. Can't go wrong with either really.

And the return is really a personal preference, if it was me i would drill it, much cleaner look overall. But over the top works just as well (Slightly more head pressure due to more fittings involved).

I would go bean all day. My tank right now is setup as a Herbie and is doing just fine. May eventually replumb it some day.

Id run them over the top because more holes might reduce the strength

You can drill for the returns if you want. If you do, make sure to do it high enough to where when the return pump isn't running the lines don't back siphon all your water out! It does look better imo, but up to you!

Bean animal is the way to go, especially since you have the 3 drain overflow box!

Sorry I made a mess of your thread! My internet must be bouncing back n forth.
