Best filtration for starting a reef tank?

Welcome to R2R. And welcome back to the hobby. As mentioned above, the simplest filtration is live rock and a skimmer. You can also run your water through filter socks as it enters the sump. That's all you really need.
One of the best places to find affordable equipment is right here at r2r in the for sale forum. There are many awesome hobbyist here and some upgrade their systems and sell off their old stuff. I bought my lights for my last tank from another member for a great deal. IMO, LED lights are more expensive on the front end but you will gain that investment back in the long run by not having to replace them for many years.
I think it's great that you are educating your children about the reef ecosystem. Biology, chemistry, mathematics all in a hands on learning environment. My oldest daughter helps me figure out how much Ca, alk, and mag to dose.

Agreed. Browse the for sale section, or even make a post statin things you would need. I’m sure many people right here have stuff they no longer need and are willing to give a deal on order to help other hobbyists. That’s the backbone of a community after all.

Sounds good to me

Hey all. Is it possible to use two or three smaller tank to do sump/refuge?

It's possible but a bit more work to set up. You'd need to drill the tanks and connect them either below the water line or stagger them vertically so they overflow into eachother so to speak.

That what I was thinking. I don’t have the room for one large sump.
