Sup guys! Working on my second tank 20l or 20h (we'll decide this weekend) but I'm a little lost on the direction I want to go with the mechanical filtration. A sump isn't realistic in my budget, but I do water changes religiously. Would I be better off turning an ac70 in a DIY sump, or aquatic life mini protein skimmer?

When I had my standard 29g I have ac70 with chemi-pure elite and a small heater in there. If I to start over again I will get Blue ocean refugium-amazon. Trying to upload pic and getting an error.

Also, had the Aquatic life skimmer and only lasted about 6 months.
The Aquamaxx hob is great but pricey.

Thanks!! You could fit the heater in there too? I mean the aquaclear seems convenient

What kind of tank? If it's gonna be a reef, I'd say it's possible to have zero mechanical filtration. At least it better be possible! I've had none for something close to ten years now....the whole time the tank/system has been running. ;)

It definitely depends what you have in store for the tank though. A fish-only system is likely to benefit a lot from it, where a reef might even suffer from it.

I wold suggest looking at something like Tunze's Reefpack though:

That's an in-tank skimmer along with an in-tank filter module capable of any kind of floss or granulated media as well as serving as a hide-away for your heater (making it a powered heater so it can be smaller usual) and ATO sensors.

Pretty slick. $213 for that model. They have a bigger one and a smaller one too.
