I dont disagree. Stability all around is really important. But it is more about the way you heat your tank and being able to manage a tight range than a thermometer.
I use an apex controller along with multiple heaters all set with programming with fall backs, tight tolerances and alarms. I am able to maintain a +/- .5 degrees.... for the most part through 350 plus gallons in my two running systems with sumps in the basement and displays on the first floor. I use thermometers then to give me a quick visual reference without having to pull up the apex dashboard. The key for maintaining stable temps to me is a Good Controller. Good Programming. Good Heaters.
Of course, it is up to you. You can spend a lot of money on being able to see +/- .5 degrees....but not sure that will help you much unless you are able to manage then the way you heat your system more accurately. My two cents worth.
Good Luck!
