trying to find a reliable non glass heater that will fit well into this tank both physical size and capacity.

Use the BRS heater and controller.

Take a look at the Cobalt Neo-therm heaters, but pair any heater you go with a temp controller of some sort for that extra level of protection. Their heaters are really slim too.
