I have a 75gl with a left side overflow (where I currently have my heater) and a 30gl sump where I have an Apex temp probe. The overflow is kind of a small area, but the majority of the flow so I was thinking that would be a great place for it but I'm getting a pretty huge discrepancy in temps.

Sump + Apex temp prob: 74.1 (yes... scary)
Heater in overflow: 80 (I'd like it at 79)

Any thoughts?

What if your return pump dies ;). That said with an Apex you have the option for temperature alerts so this could be caught in time. If you didnt't have an alert system in place than I would keep one in sump and a one in tank during the winter for safety reasons.

Totally get that. My Sump (and in know a ton are) is plexiglass and I as worried about the long term effect of a heater being right next to it. Probably silly of me.

I've kept Cobalt Neotherms and Finnex Titanium heaters in acrylic sumps, never had an issue. TONS of people have their heaters in acrylic sumps. :)

I usually keep them in the chamber that is after the temp probe so that the water has to go through the tank first before the temp probe reads the temp.

As long as the heater remains submersed in water it wont melt your sump.

Awesome, I have the Finnex Titanium so that's great to know. I accidentally touched the thing while I was trying out places for it and daaaamn near lost a few fingers, that's what caused me to put it in the tank overflow where I could mount it to glass.

It should have rubber ends on it that prevents the warm part of the heater from touching the acrylic, so it won't be an issue.

well a heater in your overflow isnt gonna help much for that, aside form heating the water in the overflow chamber.

A heater in the overflow just think of the dwell time water goes past it so quick it won't have time to heat properly.i use one in my sump and during winter months I install one in my display.works for me anyways
