Please share the link. Only video I've seen was not a growstar ufo it was one of the other brands and he only took one measurement under the center of the light. I'm interested in the whole fuge. They were also mounted at the same height which doesn't make sense because they have very different spreads. Not talking about the brs video, there is a guy who tested the ufo and kessil h380 with a parmeter in his sump, the gfo was only 300 to 400 and kessil h380 was 1400 to 1600 , theres several guys on there, of course nobody is expecting a 42 light to compare to a 300 light just interesting, anyway i am aware my light most likely failed due to conditions, and of course i will rememdy that once my kessil arrives! Anyway thanks again and happy reefing

) No problem breaking the costs to me. I won my Zetlight at Reefapalooza, so it cost me nothing, well except for the price of the raffle ticket. I'll admit that I did not read all of this thread, dinner beckoned. I had just seen the remarks about the rust and was offering another option to be considered. I'm sure there are lots of more powerful lights out there. In my setup I only have 9" of clearance between the bottom of the DT to the top of the sump. So I was looking for something a little flatter. Don't know anything about the kessil spectral controller but this does have it's own controller with 4 color channels and timers. Anyhow, movie theater beckons now, gotta run.Nice clean set up! Love the 80/20 stand and that is a nice chaeto afro you've got there lol. I can't even see the zetlight so very low profile, glad it's working well for you.Okay @BigJohnny, here's a quick video. (I think some people may be tired of seeing it.) There is no doubt the kessil is more powerful, but it is also much more focused and the difference is not 400 and 1600 when installed appropriately and averaging the whole refuge area. Well know for sure after I get my hands on one![]()
I was asking to a link for the growstar ufo vs Kessil comparison you were referring to.johnny! Received this from growstar this morning!![]()
I was asking to a link for the growstar ufo vs Kessil comparison you were referring to.
I got my Kessil h380 yesterday and finished my par testing (see image below). Basically Kessil puts out 46% more par on average when both lights are mounted at heights that achieve the most even distribution of par (without significant hotspots) in the 12x12 center area. Outside of the 12x12 the par measurements are similar. Kessil mounted at about 18" and growstar at about 7". The mounting height difference is necessary due the Kessil being a much more focused light source. You can achieve center hotspots of up to 1600+ par on both lights by mounting closer but that is way too much par imo and the distribution is terrible obviously.
In my case, the end result is I reduced my photoperiod to 8.2 hrs to match the DLI I was providing with the growstar at 12 hrs and can increase my photoperiod more down the road if I want to exceed the DLI. I am actually a little concerned the 850 peak will burn the chaeto so I may have to reduce the photoperiod further to acclimate or in general. I will document how the chaeto responds.
I have 2 other kessils already as portion of my display lighting so I'm very familiar with the quality and of course it is a fantastic light.![]()
Nice job! I was just sharing the email to let you see it is an ongoing problem with there lights that they have been made aware of thru numerous complaints, anyway goodluck i did add a cheap fan for Ventilation and my new kessil arrives on Friday, looking forward to see how my cheato reacts, goodluck with your tank tc
Thanks. They don't speak English well but all they said was we know this well now, which could easily have been them trying to say they understood your problem. No where did they say it is an "ongoing problem with their lights that they have been made aware of thru numerous complaints." I'm sure there are others that have had it rust by using it in extra humid environments outside of its intended use though. So even if that were true it wouldn't be surprising but that doesn't mean it's a bad light at all.
It is also still rated 4.3/5 on amazon.
They actually said "we have know this issue well now". You can interpret that broken English however you like : ). Like I said, the light rusting in a very humid environment with salt spray is not unexpected. They quoted “ we have known this issue well now” , so obviously i am not the first to complain! Anyway we will just have to agree to disagree
Hey bud, I haven't really noticed any difference at all. I tried my best to match the DLI when I switched lights to avoid any shock to the chaeto or change in its growth rate and therefore nutrient flow in my tank, it appears it worked lol.Hey Johnny , been almost a month. How is the Chaeto doing? Have you discovered any pros, and cons yet?
Hey bud, I haven't really noticed any difference at all. I tried my best to match the DLI when I switched lights to avoid any shock to the chaeto or change in its growth rate and therefore nutrient flow in my tank, it appears it worked lol.
Advantages so far:
1. Light looks much nicer obviously
2. Light is hanging much higher so it's much easier to trim chaeto.
3. I'm not worried about whatever small chance there was that the light would fail.
4. I can lengthen the photoperiod any where from 8 hrs back to 12 hours if I need too and get more nutrient absorption
Disadvantages so far:
1. Light is hanging much higher so more light spill and increase in coraline growth inside my skimmer and other places outside my fuge. I haven't set up the pond liner blinds but plan on it eventually.
Overall I'm pleased but it just feels like a pretty safety precaution for now.

Fantastic. I'm running the light for 14hrs now and I have to take out 50% of this every two weeks and that's pushing it. It is a rock solid brick. Its definitely a fantastic light and it grows it in thicker than my growstar ufo did. Not $/gram better but the small form factor, ability to mount it much higher, and high quality/durability make it worth it to me. Highly recommended. How is it a few months later?
I've seen and heard of users having very good luck with your first link, the UFO grow led.Hi guys,
I’m looking for a light to grow chaeto and trying to decide between these two. Any thoughts or experiences one way to the other?

Thanks!!!
The first one appears to be the better choice of the two. I had it before the kessil and it worked well. Just make sure it doesnt get wet and is plugged into a gfci receptacle or adapter.Hi guys,
