MH v. t5?

i know intensity can vary widely by specimen. the newer aussies seem to prefer lower light

I would agree, I have MH's and t5's and I keep my chalices in the sand bed. I would think that they need moderate to low light.

I have mine under 14k Aquaconnects and 2x24w actinics in 250 PAR areas and moderate flow. And I just have a few- tyree pink watermelon, Rasberry, Grape watermelon, hollywood stunner, and stardust chalice
