best lighting for the money?

I would say any 4 bulb T5 fixture would work for you in that case. Even one with a bad flat reflector should give you plenty of light

That statement is wrong in so many ways.

The reason that statement is wrong is that T5's will work fine with SPS, and you can use MH for LPS without any problems.

I actually switched a 75 gallon tank from MH (dual 400 watt), to a a 8x54 T5 setup so I had more light for my SPS corals. My par measurements at the waters surface when up by 50%.

So saying you need MH for SPS and T5's are best for LPS is completly wrong.

Kim, did you measure the par at lower points in the tank? I'm seriously considering moving to an all T5 set up but I'm waiting for the technology to catch up.

Nobody still has explained to me how my statement it is wrong in so many ways, your giving me one instance in which you had a postive experience in switching to T-5's from MH, that is a far cry from being scientific proof. The thread starter asked for opinions on which lighting is best for the money, I simply gave him my opinion, nowhere is my statement did I say it was that my way was the gospel and the only way to do it. I love how people like to twist things around. The best colored SPS tank I have ever seen in person, which was yesterday btw, was a 150g tank lit with VHO's. The best looking LPS tanks I have ever seen were T-5 lit tanks, those LPS had the best colors, every single one of them, the SPS looked good, sometimes not so good but the colors on the SPS looked way too artificial to my eye in every single instance. Some of the best looking SPS tanks I have seen we're all lit with MH lamps, the shimmer effect and the colors of the corals made it look way more natural. I was merely giving my opinion not stating scientific fact, so again for those of who you claim my statement was wrong in so many ways haven't really provided anykind of real evidence to make that accusation. It's all based on opinion folks, take it for what it's worth!

Yes we did take par measurements in different parts of the tank, and in all of them the par was higher with the T5's than with the MH's. In some areas front and back corners, there was about 2 times the par. The hole tank is more evenly lit with the T5s.

Faviafreak,

You are correct then. If you are keeping SPS the best is MH and for LPS the best is T5. I guess it has nothing to do with the light requirements of the corals in question, or the cost of the lighting or power bill or heat generation or anything else, it is just that for sps MH is the best and for LPS t5 is best.

I never once said MH is best for SPS and that is the only way to light them and T-5 is best for LPS and that's the only way to light them, it was just an obsevation based upon tanks I have seen in person and my opinion. You are the one turning this into a T-5 vs MH debate not me. I personally will be upgading to T-5's in the future, only becasue I won't really being keeping SPS , it will mainly be LPS and that's based upon my obsevations T-5's color up LPS better, Again words get minced, I'm not the one who said that my comments were wrong in many ways, the person who called me out on that never backed up their bold statement. I really don't know why people feel the need to make such accusations and then not back them up. My orignal post to this thread was once again, my opinion please stop turning it into something it's not

I have seen people who has MH and have good colored LPS . I saw SPS on a T5 set up with great coloration as well... . Both will work...

A&R, If you go with a quality light system it doesnt really matter which one you go with, its mainly personal preference. Take the time to look at different lights, look at some MH setups and some T5 setups and make your own decision as to what you like you can keep stuff alive and flourishing with either light. As you can see noone is going to agree on which one is best I have my opinions like everyone else, but opinion is not nescessarily good advice. Get a good quality light the first time so youre not buying another one in six months is all you need to know.

wow didnt mean to start a fight here.........

not at all, once your around long enough you will see how drama is always playing out on the boards, reefers in general are passionate about their beliefs, I just appreciate the fact they we are able to hash them out in a mature way and for Rev giving us the forum in which to be so passionate without putting on the handcuffs so to speak :)

well thats good to know. it is nice to have a place to share and hash these things out. I think we all learn a little something from each other even when we dont even see it. I think its healthy for everyone to have their own beliefs. thank you all for letting us be a part of all this and giving us the chance to learn.
