I don’t know what happened to mag floats. I used them for like 20 years on my freshwater tanks, but now they are scratching my saltwater tanks. I even bought new ones and they still do it. Tried a small and a large. I’m very careful as I hate scratches so I check multiple times to make sure I’m not dragging sand when I clean. I stay away from the sand. The scratches happen towards the top or middle.

I figure it might be caused by very tiny spirobid worm shells that are almost invisible, or the mag float material is too harsh.

In any case, this needs to stop. What are your tips to avoid scratching ? Any particular product better than the rest ?

Thanks !

I have a flipper. Blade is done in a few weeks. 5' tank. Maybe that's why. Also miss the old mag float.
Flipper never left a scratch.

Flipper is mediocre. I like the Tunze strong and strong Plus
My best is Mighty Magnets - Cant go wrong despite price

I feel my flippers don't do anything anymore. I've replaced the metal blade several times.

I use a hand scraper on a stick right now it's just the least convenient.

In the market for a new one so following along

I am looking for the best mini- have a 15 gal WB peninsula and have a particularly gritty brown algae that the tunze mini won't touch, only a hand held razor is hitting it
SO, best mini razor ?

I have the hammerhead float plus is what i use, and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a solution that will last a lifetime. If you want to prevent scratching your glass, get the thin magic eraser that is sold at home depot and attach it to the wetside.

I really don't like the flipper.
flipper definitely scratched my tank... I switched to tunze and its been great since.
I would toss it out instantly. The blades are expensive and wear out quick. I thought about switching to tunze.

any one try the new 2 little fishies scraper? I like my tunze, but some tougher spots, it still cant get all of it off. I have to go in with a magic eraser usually.

Love my tunze care magnet strong+

There's no comparison between mightymagnets and the rest. Very easily the best despite the higher price.

Are your tanks now low iron and old wasn't? Just wondering. I feel like my low iron type tanks scratch easier.

Aren't they primarily for acrylic? Or those pads work just as good on glass?
