Best Non-Live Sand for Gobies ?

What is the best non-live sand for sand sifting Gobies ?
Size, type etc....

My wife likes the "black" sand that seems popular, to show the colors of fish, corals and her clams.
What is this sand, where does it come from, and is it ok for sifters ?

I plan on buying safe critters, to add to the sand !

I like to use aragonite sand, sugar sized.

I don't have much experience with the black sand. I used it for like two months and wasn't a fan. I have heard that some of the black sand comes from the beaches in Hawaii. Here is some info that I found: Black Sand

Really think it comes down to user preference. Some tanks look great with black sand and some people really do like it. Others, not so much.

Many like the tropic Eden reef flakes. I just got in 120lbs for my new build and it looks pretty good

I don't like it at all. Eye catching at first but after a while it's just to dark. I think you'll be sorry

All of my sand is from reefrocks.net. Perfect grain size (IMO) as it is small enough for sand-sifters, but large enough to not create sand storms. Its also pre-washed, so that saves you time rinsing it out.

I looked up the site,, and pretty happy from the information. One small issue with the black sand, is it can get the peppered look if your rock is white. The wife is deciding between live rock we have or the much better shaped dead white.
