For a few months I seemed to have success with the way I had my piping in my overflow (pictured below) All of a sudden one day I wake up to my tank being overflowed because the return pipe was no longer taking in water. I assumed that something had gotten into it and clogged it, so I pulled everything apart and took a look. To much surprise there was nothing in there at all! I put everything back together and still had the same issues. I popped the top off to just leave a straight piece of PVC there and the water is now draining fine. I have no clue why my setup worked for months and then 1 day stopped working. What is the best way to run the piping?

The little 1/8th hole on top was probley blocked with salt not allowing air to continue the syphion , I use a tooth pick every once in a while to make sure it's clear

Agreed. Without the air siphon hole clear it won't work.

You might look at building a Stockman standpipe. They are more compact so fit in the overflow box better plus are much harder to plug with snails and stuff since the holes or drain area is protected by the large coupling. The Maggie Muffler is a premade version of the Stockman too that works well.

Looks very interesting. I also remember hearing about a garglebuster or something like that before also. The Stockman looks pretty interesting I think I may try it out! My next question would be, if nothing is able to enter the Stockman, what is really the need of the overflow box at that point? Im looking to setup a 40 gallon frag tank and also a 40 gallon refuge to add to my system very soon. I havent seen any overflow boxes for sale for a 40, and im not sure if id really even need one? My 90 gallon display tank already has the overflow, just not sure if the 2- 40s would need it?

This is just a gurgle buster. Noise dampener in the overflow box.

The Hofer is an upside down Stockman that draws water from the top of the coupling instead of the bottom.

+1 on the Herbie. Mine is also silent and the added back-up really helps me sleep at night. The Bean Animal is an other overflow style that is kinda of hybird between the herbie and durso. It has a third pipe for backup as well. I haven't tried it though.
