Hi there plan on getting a tank built soon and just wondering what the advantages/disadvantages are of interior vs exterior overflows aside from the more/less space in the tank. Thanks

Hello,

I saw you were new so wanted first to say #WelcometoR2R

I also saw you were planning a tank.. That part of the fun. I would ask first, before answering overflow question if you have chosen a tank or a size/dimension?

Some tanks may not look good with a certain type of overflow . Knowing the tank can help answer if we are drilling or going over the top.

Welcome to R2R! Internal vs external Overflow also impacts how close you can place the tank to the wall.

Prob 50Lx30Dx24H. Definitely will need to be drilled don’t want any return coming in over top or anything

I had a tank a number of years ago and am getting back into it. My previous tank had an internal corner overflow. This tank i would like to look as clean as possible. I really like the look of the new innovative marine tanks but they are so expensive. Both their interior and exterior options both look super slick. I was just never sure if there was any real advantage to one or the other or if its just more of a preference thing. Thanks for welcoming me

Cool,

If you are drilling the tank the overflow will be internal or internal/external.

Internal is buying a reef ready tank or custom built tank where the overflows are built in so the drains are drilled in the bottom of the tank. Internal/external is a tank with the back glass drilled. An internal skimmer box placed on the inside and a overflow on the outside connected by a bulkhead.

which would you lean towards

I've been debating this myself for my next build.
Internal pros: Can go closer to the wall, fewer turns in plumbing (if sump is under tank) = better flow from return.
External pros: More space in display, cleaner look, less space in overflow to accumulate crap (easier to clean).
I think I'm leaning toward external. Would be interested to see what others say.

Those IM are nice. If the new one you mentioned is what I think it is, you would have to buy a reef ready tank with the overflow built in and drilled at the bottom. Like your prior tank. The IM ext model tank has the overflow outside the DT. That requires more room from a wall.

maybe a reef ready center overflow may be something you would want to see but I only know of Aqueon that makes them and I would go IM first

I feel in my mind like the internal is safer but I can’t deny the external ghost overflow style looks pretty slick

I feel like the internal style is safer as far as leaks or anything go but those ghost overflow styles sure look pretty nice
