best placement for filter floss in aquafuge without triggering overflow issues

After a few bad experiences recently with floss i haven't used it but is there a less risky place in my aquafuge that won't overflow it within hours? its a medium aquafuge 2 with majority of the first section occupied by a skimmer and UV
