I am looking at Reef Octopus Classic 100-HOB Protein Skimmer, AquaMaxx HOB-1 Hang-On-Back Protein Skimmer, or AquaC Remora. 40 gal breeder with softy and lps only. No sump. Thanks for any advice!

I run a Reef Octopus BH1000 on a 40B no sump. It works great. I do feed a lot and wish I had the BH2000 just because bigger is always better, but it does truly run great. Runs so quiet. Motor is out of the tank giving no reason for a temp fluctuation. Clean the unit every 3 months and it will be a work horse for you. Very easy to dial in. Mine has been running for a year non stop like day 1.
If you want to see what it looks like on a 40B. 40B Knasty on YouTube.

+1. Go with Reef Octo, they always come through, but get the next size up skimmer, it is worth the money to do so. If you can't that's OK too.

Eshopps hang on is really nice. Has a Sicce pump and runs very consistent and easy to adjust. Have on on my 40 gallon breeder.

I run the Classic 100 on my 60 no sump. Had inconsistency issues for first 3 months. Gave it a 3 month cleaning a week ago and removed the foam in the return chamber. It's been skimming nonstop since! The motor on this one sits in the tank. If I discovered R2R when I bought it I would have gone with the 1000 because the motor sits outside.

Whats with sveral reviews on Amazon saying the Reef Octo has no instructions and is prone to overflowing spilling water on the floor?

It has instructions, not the best instructions, but they’re there. As far as overflowing goes, that will always be an inherent risk with HOB skimmers of any kind. This can be mitigated by running it very dry initially to allow proper break in and proper routine maintenance, especially making sure that there is no salt creep build up in the airline / venturi connection at the pump.

Any issue running this on a 20gal high? I know that its overkill but I'm ok with that. I just figured it would work if I updraded to a 60 or 90gal next year.

Just following up. I've had this skimmer for 6 months now and it works amazingly with the 20 gal. I'm carbon dosing so I see a pretty decent and consistent skim. Tank pics on my build post.
