Best skummer for 60g

whats happening with the nano one?

I'm running one on my 60 DT/ 20 sump and it skims great at setting 4 (50%) at 7 inches depth.
I have a somatic 60 that i put on it for a week, but had to run it more shallow than usual and dial back the air more than i like. I'm not a fan of tuning the air on a skimmer, but that's just me.

I had problems only when I decided to block of the ozone ventuti nipple. Leave that open to pull water if you have it blocked off. Also, if the "air" is clogging, try removing the silencer (sound my be issue though). I took mine off because it performed better and made it easier to flush the line with my weekly water changes. While my skimmer runs I have the air line up in a section of my sock compartment. I get a lot of condensation in there so the extra moisture keeps my line pretty clean.

here's a pic of it after it was cleaned and put into my sump

Tog of the silencer but it's where the air comes in on the pump
But i all so dit close the extra intake so maby I'll open it again and try it out

Go ahead and open up the 2ND ozone nipple on the pump and let it pull water. It should also help keep that primary air intake nipple clean because they are practicall touching in side the venturi as they come down inside at a 70 degreen angle towards eachother. Then let it run. If that doesn't work better then try it without the silencer.

If looking for a new one I also suggest the Somatic 60S. Seriously underrated for tank size. $200, SICCE pump, 600l/hr air draw, Titanium Screws. I really don't think there is a better skimmer value than these guys imo. I used on a 60 cube and I think would be fine on system 2x that size. FYI same air draw and pump as vertex 130i which is rated 120g light stocked (BRS recommendation).

the somatic 60 is bigger than one would expect from a skimmer with it's rating. it must be throttled back via the included air valve or it will overflow all day. sitting water level to get good performance for me was 6 to 7 inches. I have one that i plan on switching out impellers with on another sicce so i don't have to throttle it back as much. the body is press fit onto the base via o-ring and the pump is GLUED to the base (not cool). It's made really well though except when you have to replace the pump. Thanks goodness it's a sicce. They advertise titanium screws but there is only one and thats the screw to secure the wedge pipe.

Still a good skimmer though

The press fit is a pain.

I raised mine up and don’t throttle back the air at all fwiw.

ya it is! thought i was going to have to stand on it-lol. what level are you running it at? <6 inches?

i hate throttling back skimmers because once I choke the air, the skimmer becomes more tempermental and it takes longer to tune it.

wondering if you are getting to use full air because yours is on a stand and the output isn't as close to the bottom of the sump. Hmm?
