Best source for pods

Hi Hockeyhead019,

I'm not able to give you the best advice without knowing a little bit more about how you care for you aquarium. How often are you feeding your tank and what are you feeding? How much waste is left behind from the feed? Is there any nuisance algae buildup? any algae that grows on the glass?

I feed once a day, sometimes once every other. As of late, I've been spot feeding my coral as well. Currently I swap between dried mysis and pellets. Typically there is more waste with the mysis.

As far as algae, there is some but not a whole lot. It does not quickly grow on any of the glass or any of the rock. I think this is a result of minimal feeding though, so if the pods will do better in the tank with some extra feeding, that's definitely something I'm open to.

@AlgaeBarn are you pods from a fish free environment?

Victoria,

We grow our pods in a sheltered environment -- free from the terrors of fish. We coddle them throughout their life and they never even know what a fish looks like... until they reach a customers tank.

We promise to never use fish water with our copepod cultures! We are fellow hobbyist and we know the pains that pests and parasites can bring to aquariums.

This is why I would buy from them over anyone else. I want to ensure the environment is fallow and many sellers I've come across are either the LFS (sometimes hard to find) or a garage dude (QC could be iffy and they do not have the same diversity as Algaebarn). Algaebarn is moving to a bigger facility in Colorado. It should be a no brainer :).

Oh and here's the 12G video of him talking about Algaebarn's fuge packs.

Just to offer another option:

Aquarium Depot is where I restock on pods. They usually have a buy one get one free pack every few months. They have a good variety of types and sizes.

I was looking to see my tank basically. I don't have any that I know of in there. The goal is more of a "one time" seed and then let them maintain a stable population, as opposed to using them to regularly feed.
It's also about how many fish you have that will graze on pods vs needing pods as a steady diet.
I have a few small wrasses in my 233 so I add pods every couple months. The same with my 50 for a single wrasse.

Right now I just have an O clown and a Yellow watchman goby. Both eat pellets consistently so I don't know if they'll deplete a population enough to be concerned. I was also going to dump half into my sump where I have some LR and Cheato so that should be a safe haven for them.

I say whatever is available locally. I got pods from the LFS. Where around Philly are you? I know Mini Reef in Prospect Park has Reef Nutrition pods, so does Aquarium World in Chichester.

I started the same way as you with dry rock and Bio Spira and I added chaeto and pods.

Since our product was mentioned, I am compelled to jump in here. Thanks for supporting us and your local fish store @timrocks311! We appreciate the recommendation. For anyone interested in our diverse and concentrated phytoplankton, Phyto-Feast, and our live copepods, please check out our store locator here: https://reefnutrition.com/store-locator/

We offer two species of copepods: Tigriopus californicus "Tigger-Pods" and Apocyclops panamensis "Apex-Pods". Both compliment each other for size and nutrition. Thanks for starting this thread @hockeyhead019 !

Best,
Chad

I just left a glowing review on @AlgaeBarn's website. Today I looked at the tank and was wondering what these white spots were on my glass. I pulled out a magnifying glass and sure enough my tank is full of pods running out on all sides of my tank ;Woot. Now I know why my wrasse has been picking at the rocks lol.
