Its time for my move to a larger tank and I've read so much to help me with the change. I hear its best to use my old sand and also that new sand is best to keep from moving your crap along to the new system. I have a 6 inch sandbed now. Its competely natural from the ocean near where I live in South Florida. My favorite guy in my aquarium is my wonderful and fascinating Engineer (or Convict) Goby. He's about a foot long. He/she seems to do fine with the sand I have and its moved to create tunnels and mountains daily. I never know what I'm going to awake to with this guy. Anybody have a suggestion for a good substrate for him? He's getting a new living quarters and I've decided on new sand with a little of my old to seed it with.

Mine does fine with my sand. Gosh, it has been forever, but I am pretty sure I got Carib Sea special grade way back when this was set up. Love mine too. However, you really have to allow for them in a tank. They make crazy messes and rearrange everything. :) I think people get them young and they are cute until they get bigger. Mine came from a fellow reef keeper.

I've got one of those guys myself.

My engineer was little when I got him too. I have him in sand collected from the ocean here in South Florida. When I first set up my system I used local sand and water from the ocean far out enough to not get any pollutants. I have collected many things especially hitchhikers from Sargassum floating by. I'd feel guilty about that except it was being picked over by gulls and I figured I saved them from being a meal. You never knew what was in there because most were microscopic when collected. I stopped doing that years ago after getting some real mean crabs, fish like red snappers and a pistol shrimp that although is beautiful has been a PITA and owns prime real estate in my tank that even my engineer avoids. He's not moving into my new setup. I plan to isolate him and see if my LFS wants him.
My engineer def has personality and i love his face as he watches me constantly. He'll reveal his entire size to me which has made me jump occasionally since he's become so big but won't for others so all they see is his face kinda like the pic you provided but not out that far. I was wondering if he'd enjoy a finer substrate. My sand is kinda large grain and since I'm getting new, I wonder about his digging and ability to form tunnels in a finer grain sand.
