Best Tang for a 120

I think foxface is a great idea! I have a full grown one in FO tank and very small one in 93 cube reef. Great fish!

This whole structure is open in the middle and fish swim all around through the rocks and the middle. It’s the only way we could justify a purple tang in a 93 cube. This reef we hope to make into a zoas garden. The fox can move to my 300 reef when it outgrows the 93 which it may.

Yellow tang for high visibility or Kole eye tang for good color and algae control

U had a powder brow. In my 120. My favorite fish by far and imo the most peaceful of the tang group

I would suggest a Kole tang or any of that genus that appeals to you. Nearly any tang of the genus will work fine in a 120.

A yellow tang should pair up well with a Kole tang and should do fine in a 120. Some of the other small Zebrasoma tangs might work. I have a yellow tang and it was a pleasant surprise. Yellow tangs at the LFS tend to be gaunt and a bit pale. Once you get them in a tank, they fatten up nicely and their yellow nearly glows.

For Acantherus tangs, most of them get big and really should have a 6’ tank.

Many of the more exotic tangs get so large that they would need a tank that is 3’ wide and 8’ long or even longer.

WhAt a beautiful group of fish! Nice tank! The powder brown is awesome! I bought mine a whole new tank just for that fish! I was so sad when I lost that one.

I am feeling the Kole for sure. I like the purple they have and they seem to have great personalities. I am on the fence about adding a yellow. I really want to have one but I just want to make sure I'm giving it enough space. It's something I will consider for sure.

Common varieties like the Yellow are good for me since I'm trying to source the vast majority of my fish from local hobbiests.

Purples tend to be on the aggressive side and IMHO definitely need a 6 foot long tank, I agree with the recommendation of a One Spot Foxface. I would get the Kole and a One Spot Foxface as a compromise to the Yellow Tang. It will perform a similar function, give you a yellow fish, but it will be significantly more likely to be well behaved. That and they go night camo at night and can alter color based on mood. I replaced my jerk of a Yellow Tang with a One Spot Foxface and have been much happier with it.

I really like rabbit fish in general. I had magnificent for a few years. No idea why he died but I'd like to get another. A bit shy at first but he had a great personality

You said you were getting your fish from local hovbiests, what state do you live in? Just wondering because we have a very good LFS here that I really trust for getting all my fish!

Nevada. I have good LFS near me but I'm trying to stick with rescued animals for environmental reasons. All my current fish are from members of my local reef club.

I have a white tail and a one spot foxface in my 120. They are best buds. No aggresion in my tank. Both large fish and doing fine.

I have a white tail in my 120. Does a great job at keeping rocks and class clean.

What a beautiful fish! That’s a great picture! I wanted one but already have chevron, blue eyed kole and tomini! What a nice fish, thanks for sharing!

That’s a great idea! We should all do that! Would probably help with disease control too. I love that idea. I often see people selling systems on Craigslist and wonder what they do with the fish when they take the systems down. We have actually bought fish from our LFS that were returns our Sohal 12 yrs old, porcupine puffer also old and Koran angel all very large fish. So we hope to have given them a forever home! We are In Wisconsin.

Interesting, my Foxface and Copperband are best buds they constantly swim together. The tang does his own thing. I think the tang is to active for the other two.
